Title: Epic Orchestrations
Post by: Retsof on March 03, 2011, 05:52:36 pm
You know that kind of music that just makes anything you happen to be doing at the moment epic?  This is where it can be shared.
I'll start with a particular author that is a master of EWQL Symphonic Orchestra.
Adventure Land (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgKKLngGEtA)
Conquest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLvsS6o0hJY&feature=related)

And, just to prove I'm a huge nerd.  An orchestrated peice from Zelda (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNRuevB76Xw)
Yes, this is an elaborate way of asking you guys to do the searching for me  :p

Collection of stuff by Randy Edelman from the Gettysburg soundtrack.

Charging Up The Hill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XE_xYtgJ0A)

This is the best goddamn track in the movie. It's called Armistead Is Hit, but you should really see it... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmFMvm8WE-o)

..in the native environment, starting at about 0:45 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt2dSV8Bshs)

EDIT: Not sure about the epic, but Fife and Gun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kNeGtqP7zw) was always one of my favorites.

Any later symphony by Beethoven. All of them qualify, but a few particular highlights would be:

5th Symphony, 1st movement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRgXUFnfKIY) - Though all of it is epic, the first movement is possibly the most famous piece of classical music ever.
7th Symphony, 2nd movement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uOxOgm5jQ4) - The first 3 minutes or so might well be my favourite among all of Beethoven's compositions.

Wagner:

Tannhäuser overture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pkdeQqsvhU) - First three-four minutes or so, mainly, and the ending.
Ride of the Valkyries (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AlEvy0fJto) - How come noone mentioned this before now? Come on.

Another epic Holst planet to go with StarSlayer's "Mars, the Bringer of War":

Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz0b4STz1lo) - Can't help but love this one.

And finally, we can't leave out the good old Pipe Organ:

Toccata and Fugue in D minor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATbMw6X3T40) - By Bach. Much of his other stuff would qualify, too.

So many to choose from!

Just about anything by Jeremy Soule.
Rebel Camp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r46yzCB82kA)

I love me some of Murray Gold's Dr Who too:
All the strange, strange creatures (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEcij0ARkmU)   <-- Why yes, I have designed a Freespace mission for this one. Someday I may even release it.
UNIT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIQKBVM4ewE)  <!-- And this is it's briefing music.

I'm also a fan of the music from Aquaria:
Arnassi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSEnY5SWJZU)
Undiscovered Waters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP7nBFk1C20)

And Mechwarrior II is always great, here's one of my favorites (among many, the whole soundtrack oozes awesome):

Well, might as well mention certain stuff by Johan Sibelius:

Finlandia, Op. 26 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgwr3wrenkQ) - a symphonic poem from year 1899. I'm not too big on nationalism as an ideology, but damn if it didn't produce a lot of awesome music.
Swan of Tuonela (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfBTiv3WGU0). A bit more sedate piece but... well. Go and listen to it. I'd qualify it as "epic" all right.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj9w-0H9s-o (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj9w-0H9s-o) - G-Nome Track 9 - from an old video game from 1996. came with the Packard Bell win95 box we bought in 1998.

Also, second anything, ANYTHING from the mechwarrior 2 soundtrack. That soundtrack was great.

All good stuff here so far.  I'm rather fond of James Horner's work on the Star Trek scores but if I had to pick one piece from the two films it would have to be Stealing the Enterprise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UCQppVLMGs). (For the sake of all that is good play it on some decent speakers and play it loud!)

Well this will all take a long time to listen through. :p

My own contribution is the start of Dvorak's New World Symphony, 4th Movement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yctfXIqugXc).  I was exposed to it by the anime series One Piece, of all things, but it's freakin' awesome.

So many I haven't heard. Here are two that just came to mind just now.

X-Ray Dog - The Prophet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DPyW0TGqqQ&feature=related)

Track from level 1 of The Hive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG_PpESoF9A), released in 1995. It gets really good from 2:22 onwards, and unfortunately the intro and sound effects play over the music but other than that it can be heard very clearly. Apparently the other tracks from this game are pretty good too. I think the rest of them can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0CB_1Tcxzc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0CB_1Tcxzc)
