Title: Freespace 2 open mac help!
Post by: drummingasm on March 06, 2011, 11:42:12 pm
I recently download freespace 2 open from (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/20400/freespace2) and it is fantastic. Unfortunately, i've encountered a few problems that i haven't been able to figure out.

1. Game crashes a lot. Like, a lot. It crashes an average of every 3 minutes. Each mission is like 10 minutes long. It usually takes a good 10 tries before i actually finish the mission without the game crashing. It has crashed in the main menu, when i click accept for a mission, at random times during the mission, and during the death cam when I die. Sometimes when it crashes it just freezes and i have to cmd-opt-esc out, and sometimes it crashes out with the standard mac osx crash error. The game is fantastic, but this is a huge problem. This is the debug report (or whatever it's called.) Not sure what part of this is important, so i'll paste the whole thing.

2. During the later missions, the effect sound randomly stops. Like, i fire my weapon and it makes a pew-pew noise, and suddenly it cuts out. Sometimes the noise comes back, sometimes it doesn't. It doesn't seem to affect background music though, just ship noises and radio transmissions.

3. I haven't been able to get soulstorm's mac osx freespace 2 launcher working. I downloaded it form (http://www.soulstorm-creations.com/) I figured maybe some of my problems above would be fixed by it. The first time i opened it, it gave me some flag error that didn't seem to do anything. So i opened up the launcher and launched the game. After a while in a mission, it inevitably crashed.  It turned out the launcher crashed too. I started the launcher up again, but i couldn't open it. I thought this was odd. Since I had the original downloaded .dmg file, i simply trashed the fs2 launcher and created a new one from the .dmg file. It worked. I was in a mission again and it crashed. The launcher also crashed, but i couldn't open it again. I dumped it and created a new one from the .dmg file, but this one also didn't work. I downloaded the file again and dumped all remanence of the fs2 launcher, but i still couldn't open it. It gave me the "quit unexpectedly" error. I looked inside the program files and found the a terminal debug screen. I'll paste it here because it might be important.

Then i tried to get an older version of the launcher because i finally finished the main freespace campaign and wanted to play mods (like inferno). I downloaded version 2.0.1 and executed the .dmg file, but i got a really strange window that said the image could not mount because it was not recognized.

My specs (incase it helps)
2.53 ghz intel core 2 duo
4 gb memory
mac os x v 10.5.8

Any help would be much appreciated.

What the...?

That website does not look like a legitimate distributor of FreeSpace 2.

You should be running 3.6.12 final; the file should be called FS2Open_3.6.12_SSE2 or something like that. Unfortunately you showed up just as we're going through a brief server outage so I can't offer a Mac download link. Can anyone help her out?

You should seriously consider getting a legit copy of FreeSpace 2 from GoodOldGames.com, it's only $6. A good FS2Open install on Mac should be 100% stable and rarely if ever crash.

All i see are windows versions. Will i need a real or virtual pc? Cause if so i can't.

edit: the website i downloaded from is a legitimate website. I've downloaded stuff from it before.

Also i tried to downloaded the "inferno" build from (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70692.msg1398117#msg1398117) but the link is broken or something.

Here are the files in my freespace2 folder:
warble_fs2.vp
tangoB_fs2.vp
tangoA_fs2.vp
tango(3 to 1)_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
server.txt
root_fs2.vp
readme_367.txt
README OS X.rtf
FS2_Open-debug
FS2_Open
FS2_Launcher (i put this in this file)

I recall there being some Mac equivalent of WINE, you can use that. Or if you ever get the chance to use a Windows PC, install FS2 there, then coldheartedly just copy the entire \freespace2\ directory to your Mac with the help of a flash drive, external HDD or a CD/DVD.

I recall someone else getting their "Mac version" of FS2 from that site you got it from and it possibly is a working version (that is, it contains valid copies of the retail FS2 files), but officially we hope everyone would get their FS games from GOG if they haven't purchased a copy in '99 etc etc...

Also i tried to downloaded the "inferno" build from (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70692.msg1398117#msg1398117) but the link is broken or something.
Yeah, uh, as Battuta already said, there are some issues with hosting right now. Worry not, these issues should soon be resolved. Stay tuned.

Here are the files in my freespace2 folder:
warble_fs2.vp
tangoB_fs2.vp
tangoA_fs2.vp
tango(3 to 1)_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp

root_fs2.vp
readme_367.txt
README OS X.rtf
FS2_Open-debug
FS2_Open
FS2_Launcher (i put this in this file)
flags.lch
data
What you'll need from this set of files are
Code: [Select]
root_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango(3 to 1)_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp
Also, there really should be a file called "sparky_fs2.vp", because it contains some really important stuff, like textures, sounds etc. In addition to that, once the builds are available, get 3.6.12 INF as was instructed. And if your Mac has something that could be defined as a graphics card, get the 3.6.12 MediaVPs for maximum graphical pleasure.

oh sorry i skipped over sparky_fs2.vp in my list, i do have it in there.

I'll get the media vps in there soon.

where can i download the wine version of the game?
Creating my own seems like a lot of work and i thought it requires a pc (lol)

Also, has anyone had my mac fs2 launcher problem? It is very strange. I think it might be some weird permissions problem or something.

I've just downloaded fs2 from GoG, just need a pc -> mac thing.

FreeSpace Open will allow you to run your GoG version of FS2 on any platform, Mac Windows or Linux. Unfortunately the build download servers went down a couple days ago and they're not quite up again.  :( They should be back online shortly.

but i don't have the GoG version of Fs2, i have the GoG verion of setup_freespace_2.exe

FreeSpace 2 (GoG or otherwise) is windows. You can copy the VP files to another OS (under the same structure as it is in Windows) and then use an FSO/SCP build to run it under another OS.

So, if the VP files are not directly available, then you'll need to find/borrow/etc a Windows machine to run the install from so that you can copy the VP files over. (Not sure if GoG's distribution is just a single exec package or a series of Disc images)

Oh bluh, that sucks. Well like Zacam said, can you find a Windows machine to install on, then copy it over to the Mac?

not yet, i'm trying to get one.

I'm still having the launcher problems though, and i don't think my version of freespace 2 should be affecting the launcher.

You could try opening the GoG setup_freespace_2.exe with something like 7zip. Most installer files usually have the actual data files encapsulated within them in a compressed format, so if you can find the necessary retail VP files, you should be able to extract them that way.

What will also work is if you download Wineskin (free Wine frontend for the Mac - very good) - run the GOG installer in Wineskin and just copy the necessary files out from that. If all you're interested in is running the GOG installer, Wineskin fairly straightforward to use and you can get the files once you're finished.

i decided to install the game on a windows machine and copy the vp files to my mac. Then i ran FreeSpaceOpenInstaller or whatever it was called and it downloaded a ton of files. The game does not crash anymore.

I only have 2 problems now.

1. Voice sound does not sound. Effects and music work though. I downloaded openAL, but this didn't change anything. Is there something i need to do to connect openAL to fs2 open, or does this happen automatically?

2. Soulstorm's mac os x freespace launcher doesn't open. it bounces, then errors. Is there a way to fix this, or are there other launchers i could use?

I'm so close. It's frustrating.

It seems the voices are not there because they aren't supported by fs2_open? I'm not sure.

Anyways, the launcher stops working as soon as it selects fs2_open-inferno. I downloaded an older version of soulstorm's  launcher, and it errored when it selected it. I think there must be some compatibility problem with my version of...something (mac os x, fs2_open...) and the launcher. I gave read/write premissions to the launcher and fs2_open-inferno, so i don't think it has to do with permissions. Is mac osx 10.5.8 compatible with the launcher?

Where do you not have voices?

Be advised that the majority of campaigns is not voice acted. If you're trying to play FS2 retail campaign, though, you should definitely get the voices.

First thing to check would be that you don't have voice volume muted on the in-game settings...

ok i feel stupid.

I didn't copy over all the vps from my windows installed. I have now, and there are voices.

My only problem now is the launcher. It always crashes when i open it. Based on reading stuff about fs2 open, i really need the launcher to play mods and use media vp graphics. Is there any solution to my problem?
