shockwave.pof in mv_effects.

That's actually a disk though.
I was once looking for a real spherical shockwave, posted on this forum some time ago, unfortunately as an attachment.
I couldn't find it though.

Check the ED board. It's by Nighteyes.

We're talking about the model, not effects.

Oh thank you, are you the author or close enough to the project to tell me if we can use it in another mod? if yes, who is the author or what sould we say in the credit about it?

keeping with my tradition, I'm making these public, so post feedback and enjoy :)
I can safely say that you can use it, and you should credit Nighteyes.

@Dragon: I think he doesn't care whether it's a model or an effect. He just wants what he sees in the screenshots with the spherical shockwaves, and those happen to be Nighteyes's effects.

I don't think so, and there are no spherical shockwaves, only 3D ones and 2D ones (both flat).
You can credit "FS Upgrade Project" if you use the model from Mediavps.
Effects are another matter entirely (and Mediavp ones weren't made by Nighteyes).

You could theoretically make a 3D sphere called shockwave.pof and give it its own effect, but shockwave.pof doesn't grow correctly- you'd need it to start very small and expand, which it doesn't do atm. IIRC it grows a small amount but not much.

That is the sphere version.

well, I figured I'll post it here, as most people don't know we moved over here...

there are 4 shockwaves in the pack, fiery orange and the classic blue, 2D versions come at a 1024x1024 rez, while the 3D versions at 512x512(the way its rendered they appear same rez as the 2D ones)

http://www.mediafire.com/?z4uhbnyvxfnz3a3

*to get these working in-game
first, choose a color :P
for 2D shockwaves drop the appropriate files(shockwave01) into folder: mediavps_3612/data/effects
I forgot to add the EFF file, so grab it here or create it yourself, drop it into the same folder as well:
http://www.mediafire.com/?7j94tr9t95lbmq3

for 3D shockwaves, drop the appropriate files(shockwave3D-glow) into folder : mediavps_3612/data/maps
the EFF file should be the same, just rename it to shockwave3D-glow.eff, place it also in the same folder.

I figured some screenshots would help

In which way is that spherical?
These are flat, just like every other 3D shockwave.
They even use Mediavps model.
Somebody once made a real, working, 3D spherical shockwave.

yup after testing them i figure they were not spherical but on screenshot they looks like spherical, however they look really nice!

That's news to me. Especially given the constraints and limitiations and the fact that since we've had go_faster and other updates it's still not feasible (nor does it work all that well at all) and absolutely rapes performance, I'd hate to think of what it would have done on anything prior to now.

In short, if I am actually wrong (and not just mis-remembering) then I'd love to see some actual linked proof rather than conjecture.

yeah, as far as I know the growing sphere(or any other shape) isn't really working for shockwaves, I tested this a few times with different shapes for shockwaves, all produced strange bugs...
I think the best solution for shockwaves will be having a 2D one to outline the outer shape+particles for a heat distortion effect, when the materiel system will be in place and more advanced shaders will be possible I'll defiantly give it a try, as I know scripting the particles is possible in some way for sure

Not that I've dabbled in this before, so my 10 cents doesn't count for much...

But wouldn't it be possible to fake a sphere expansion using 2 or more shockwaves, precise triggering, and graphics
that would compliment each other at the edges as they expand to give that illusion?

Although I didn't found the model yet, now I know where I may have it.
Since it's on my younger brother's computer (it used to be mine), it may take some time till I'll be able to look for it.
Once I will find it, I'm going to post screenshots (or a notification on failure).
The guy who made it claimed it worked, but looked a bit ugly with the texture he used.

I hope this gets found, and that it works/can be made to work.

I remember that a while back DaBrain was poking around at the same thing. Results were inconclusive, but if you're interested, the thread is here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=73834.msg1461879#msg1461879
