I came across this game today: http://www.minerwars.com/ ?aid=16047
Have you seen it? They have a lot on their page if you click the About section. It looks pretty sweet.
I'm not trying to be off topic from Freespace (which I love dearly) but this is a 6-degrees of freedom game and a space sim! It says it has a compelling story, but I don't see that it could be as compelling as some of the Freespace mods I've played :)
Anyone played it? I'm downloading the demo :)

Oh yeah! And they are looking to hire new model builders!
I thought some of you might be interested in that :)
Hello there! Have you seen this? http://www.minerwars.com/ ?aid=16047
It's kinda like Decent/Freespace and they are needed model builders! Just thought I'd say that :)
****ing triple-post merged :) Also added an "s" to the topic.--JeffGreenPowerVader

Hmmm. Rather interesting. Site is still rather vague, and I don't care for purchasing prior to Alpha (even with a discount) but all in all, it might just have some hope. Hopefully it doesn't get stuck with being interior space only.
However, any objections to moving this over to "Gaming Discussion" since technically, it isn't FreeSpace or Modding related? (aside from possibly another avenue to stick FS Ships in)
-
Sure move it where it needs to be :)
And I just saw that the guy who did the music for Miner Wars also did the music for the Decents and Freespaces
-
It's Descent. And yes, we are aware of it, and Dan Wentz's involvement.
Also, moved to gaming.
Oh, and please keep it to one thread per topic, okay?
-
Ok sorry!
-
This is the third time 'someone' has registered an account here for the sole purpose of advertising this game, right?
:ick:
-
If so, those post's don't exist any more. It's had mention a time or ten by various members though in other places (like: Re it's Voxel engine, etc)
-
I've found two other topics about it, though I was mistaken about the accounts being created solely to post about it.
This is the first.
-
I thought the game looked like it could be awesome and since this is a super active Freespace community, and since Freespace came from Decent, and since they are looking to hire modelers and I know that there are some great artists here, I wanted to post the game.
And yeah, I did create an account before I posted the game. I mean, if people were going to click on it, someone should get some credit right?
People are always giving free advertising about products and things they like. As a company, personal advertising is the best! It's free and works. I often post on my facebook about Freespace or a movie a like or something good I ate, and I don't get anything for that. But since there is the possibility of getting something from Miner Wars and since I wanted to bring it up anyway, I made an account.
I love Freespace a lot because I love space (I guess real space isn't as interesting probably, but I'd love to go there!). I love exploring and getting caught up in a story. The more I read about Miner Wars the more I think it'll be all those things. I mean, it literally has no edge to the universe! And if the single player is too hard you can call in friends to help!
I don't know how it will compare to Freespace Open. I'm sure some things will be better and I'm sure plenty of things won't be. I'm sure the controls won't be as complex (something I love about Freespace) but I'm sure the idea of an open universe will be incredible.
Thanks!
Luke

It's Descent.

Now it makes sense. I dunno about you guys, but I'm incredibly ":blah:."

Wow.... Encouraging cross-forum spam and nurturing the e-penis mentality of internet forum-goers? Suddenly I find myself disliking this developer. Sad too, because I was interested in Miner Wars. Now, markedly less so.

I'm not a part of the company, I'm just a kid.

Indeedery. Making a product that people WANT to tell their friends about is one thing, actually encouraging them to do so through crap like that is ... questionable. I mean, yeah, it's basically an invitation to linkspam. Which noone likes to see.
-
I disagree. Like I said in my post, I was going to post about it anyway.
-
What do you disagree with? That encouraging people to linkspam is a bad thing?
-
I think it's a good thing to give people who would advertise for you anyway something for what they do. I think it makes the company admirable.
Like referrals. Sure they are annoying, but not when you're the one referring people and you're getting paid.
I'm sure you wouldn't complain if you got a free copy of Miner Wars right?
And since I was going to post it anyway, how is that spam? If I just linked the website and said the same thing, this wouldn't be an issue right?
Well I think it's better that companies give stuff to people who would already talk about their product. It makes a lot of sense to me.

It also encourages bad forum behaviour. It causes annoyance for other board regulars.

Can't you see the point we're making? Sure, it's good for you (for subjective values of good), but what about the rest of us? Are we supposed to just tolerate linkspam?

No. But now we know that you are effectively getting paid to annoy us. Which is annoying.
Well I think it's better that companies give stuff to people who would already talk about their product. It makes a lot of sense to me.
And I think that making a product that gets people genuinely excited is better than making a product that you think needs extra promotion in the form of a hired mob of linkspammers.

This is from your point of view. I would be equally annoyed if someone crammed ads about something in my mailbox because they want to get something for free. And if a developer/other faction encourages people to go "spreading the word" as much as possible, they are somewhat dickheads.
Also, the one thing that really pokes me in the eye here is that, even though you've used the magic word "FreeSpace" in your posts, it still seems that you've only registered here at Hard Light Productions so that you could promote Miner Wars and possibly get something from the Miner Wars developers. In my book, this counts as advertising, and if you read the registration agreement while registering (of course you did, you couldn't register if you didn't agree to the conditions in it), you'll remember it saying that "Spam, flooding, advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are also forbidden on this forum". Think about it.
-
You're right of course, any advertising can be annoying.
And I only got the account on there after I decided to post about it... And I only decided to post about it after reading about it and getting excited. They didn't ask me to post about it or contact me, they just wrote in a section that takes a little while to get to that if you tell people about their game, you can get free stuff.
So yeah, advertising can be annoying, but I was going to "advertise" it anyway...
Yeah, I hadn't registered until then. I have been needing to ask some questions because my Freespace Open doesn't seem to be running like it should and it always shows the fps... I haven't had time to search to forum for the answer yet either.
But since I wanted to bring up Miner Wars, I registered on here.

Anyways, it's an ugly piece of game. Brown and grey. Hurray.
And you didn't get Jeff's point. It's not only annoying, it's against forum rules.
The FPS is shown because in the launcher it is set up to show it.

Well if I have to be banned I have to be banned. Rules are rules or course.
And no, the launcher isn't set up that way. Does it have to do with the Inferno build?
I don't think I did anything wrong though, though I'm sorry if I did.

Read the FSO FAQ stickied in the FSO support board. Follow its instructions.

Ok thanks!

Haha, I actually mentioned something about that on their forums. They say their art style is "industrial".

That's so nineties.

It has potential, I think: it's captured the feel of Descent better than anything I've played since. If the pre-alpha demo is any indication, though, they have quite a ways to go in order to make it fun.
-
I was kinda interested in it, but the way they chose to advertise the thing is putting me off, to be honest.
-
This is the kind of advertising that puts me off. The latest things prior to this that have caused me ire have been Bulletstorm and Rango, who's annoying, intrusive ads have made sure that I wouldn't be purchasing them, although chances are I probably wouldn't have, anyway. But this is a game which is firmly in my preferred genre, and now they're actively pushing me towards either not playing it or pirating it rather than buying it because of **** like this. I just couldn't justify giving money to a company who make an effort to spam my forum - and consider - we've only gotten one of these (well, 3) but there must be larger forums which have gotten multiple people trying to get clicks, and potentially dozens of these sorts of topics.
I dunno, maybe I'm in the minority, but I would have thought they could have come up with a better system that wouldn't alienate their potential user base.
-
Forgive them :P.

They're trying to do the Minecraft-viral model. The difference is that while Minecraft was/is an unfinished game, it was still extremely playable. Miner wars has a neat engine, but nothing really to play and generate viral excitement. And viral excitement isn't something you can force by incentivizing it.
