Title: RE: Re: freespace app for my iphone (MOD Edit: Won't Happen)
Post by: Fearless Leader on March 31, 2011, 12:29:01 am
I just wanted to say that I am sorry for creating a thread that got locked, and for being a n00b.
I was just excited by the idea.
I'll get to work on learning C and C++, I should be able to start work in the next 5 years

That's the spirit!

I want to start linking up with beta testers now.

And I realize we are going to have to give up some features, like targeting, wing command, energy management, and rearm/repair, as well as HUD features such as radar, target indicators, ammo count, afterburner energy, and shield/hull status.

Basically the controls will be fly/don't fly, up/down, left/right/ roll, and shoot

Oh god.

I applaud your enthusiasm (and we can all use more coders, don't get me wrong), but seriously. You are in over your head.

Also, you should only start looking for people to test your port once you actually have something to test.

Oh, and if you really want to do this for the iPhone, please remember that that is actually impossible due to licensing issues (unless you wish to make an app only for jailbroken iThings, of course).

Yeah, if you want to learn C++, I'd suggest using that knowledge to get involved in the SCP here.

Nothing wrong with the enthusiasm, but it just might be futile.

:nono: Part of the planning phase will be getting license from those guys... over there :wtf:...
I need to first figure out who those guys are  :v-old:
Second, figure out a way to contact said guys

Spoiler:
The only thing realistic about this is the time table ... I still need to link up with testers, for idea testing

Uhmm.

Okay. How much money do you have? Because you need to change the license agreement on the code (ask :v:), AND secure licensing rights from Interplay. Both of which involves having copyright Lawyers present.

And again, that is not counting the technical difficulties involved in this, which are:
1: iOS apps are Objective-C, FSO is C and C++, so you need to translate that
2: FSO uses OpenGL Core, iOS uses OpenGL ES, which also needs translation
3: FSO uses OpenAL as its sound interface. I don't think that's present on iOS
Actually, it is, so that's probably not a problem
4: Coding in a new control mechanism isn't that easy

So, if you are looking for idea testing, this is it. I tested your idea, and found that it lacked technical merit (due to the incredible amount of work you'd have to do) and real-world practicality (due to licensing issues).

Kk. Add another 2.5 years for learning Objective-C, which is what must be used when coding Iphone apps.

And I realize we are going to have to give up some features, like targeting, wing command, energy management, and rearm/repair, as well as HUD features such as radar, target indicators, ammo count, afterburner energy, and shield/hull status.

Basically, forget about porting FS to Iphone. Instead, start from scratch (easier to make a few things from scratch than removing a lot of things from something that exists), and call it something other than "FreeSpace" to avoid licensing issues.

Actually, with each post you sound more and more like a troll. It's just my opinion, you might be serious.

Oh, get money. For creating Iphone apps you need a Mac and an Iphone developer license. Both of which are Apple products and therefore cost an awful lot of money.

No. Just. No.

What would be easier to accomplish? Coding an App like Dead Space was. See, that's not actually Dead Space on a phone, it's just something that LOOK's like it's dead space. Quake got it's port, cause id Software is awesome.

So you make an interface game that resembles FreeSpace. Naturally, you probably won't get to call it that, but whatever. You can have "ships" in it that may resemble the FS ships greatly. And they can carry weapons that look remarkably similar in effects.

And all of that would be SIGNIFICANTLY easier to accomplish than trying to port the FSO Source AND ASSETS over to such a platform. And The E's qualifications also still stand in terms of other hurdles.

It's not that you started a post that led to a locked spam fest. Until you did the post that started THIS topic.
