Title: FS2 crashing on startup
Post by: Regent on April 02, 2011, 03:21:15 am
When I run Freespace 2, this error always pops up:

Can someone please help?
Thanks.

There's your problem. The Inferno team hasn't bothered to update their installers, so that it still uses the old, invalid way of modding FS2. Please delete this file, and complain about it to them.

Hey Loremaster96 -

You need to install FreeSpace Open in the same directory as FreeSpace 2.

If you have any further errors, please generate an FS2_Open.log file as described in the troubleshooting FAQ and post it. That will let us solve your error with almost 100% success.

Please remember to return to a release build to actually play the game.

I see two error lines towards the end. Cannot totally figure out what is is.

Important! Bare in mind that I installed Freespace open using the installer, in pieces; i.e. interrupt the installation and continue another day. (always selecting "The works") Could that be it? In addition, I installed the retails in there after installing FSO.

Looks like a similar, although not the same problem, as the starter post in this thread. Tried to remove (didn't delete, just moved out, so as to keep it) the INF_main related files in ..\inf1. Any help is highly appreciated.

Oh, and greetings to the FSO community, I just turned to FreeSpace after so many years, and have only had little time with FSO. Looking forward to exploring FSO further! My sincere appreciation to the development teams and contributors.  :)

What is this? Remove or delete it.

What are these?

Those should probably also be removed/deleted.

Isn't mdisk.vp a FreeSpace 1 file?  Just checked, yes it is.  So are voc.vp, freespace.vp, and cbanim.vp

-- You installed FreeSpace 1 and then installed the Open Installer to the same directory.  BAD... did you install FreeSpace2 retail at all, and if so, where?  The Installer needs to be set to the FreeSpace2 directory, which needs to be separate from the retail FS1 directory.  The FreeSpace Port, however, is a FreeSpace 2 / Open mod that ports the FS1 campaigns to FS2 / Open, and, as such, goes in it's own mod directory, under the FreeSpace 2 directory.

Like this:

FS1 Retail dir:

C:\Games\FreeSpace

FS2 Retail dir:

C:\Games\FreeSpace2

FS2 Open dir (Installer dir):

C:\Games\FreeSpace2
(exact same as FS2 Retail, it's an upgrade for FS2 retail)

FS2 Open's mod, FSPort dir:

C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fsport
C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fsport-mediavps
(there are two directories for FSPort, don't worry about them, the Installer takes care of that, I'm just letting you know where they are)

Yeah he has FS2 installed in that directory. It looks like he put both the FS1 and FS2 files in the same dir, which won't work.

Heh, he said he doesn't have much Open experience, probably used to the way you had to patch FS1 / FS2 Retail, which was sticking the mods' .vp files in the main FS directory.

We don't do it that way any more, the Launcher allows you to have mods in separate directories and select them, as well as configuring a multitude of other options and goodies.  Keep in mind, however, that when you select a mod, you will have to go to the campaign room and select the Mod's campaign, cause the game will have the FS2 campaign selected, and you want to play the mod's campaign.

I installed FS1 in there too...  :banghead: :banghead: I'll uninstall it hoping it will remove all the unwanted components, and reinstall it in a separate path. Thanks guys.  :)

Will install from scratch. FS1 alone, FS2 with FS2 open together. Thanks again.
