Does anyone else think that the last Toonami intro (the one before they shut it off) really blew?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6pb_4VFeE8&feature=related
It sounded like some money-hungry fat cat listened to "what dem kids be talkin bout these days on their urban dictionaries and blogs" and threw in retarded exchanges like the one starting at :25. Wtf Tom? You sound and look like an idiot.
"In the pipe, five by five!"
...
*Blink*
"Word."
They ended up making Tom sound like a soundbite-spouting stoner who was just so "totally rad".
I mean I could deal with the fact that they took it off the spaceship, but then there was the whole deal with the visual aesthetic - they totally changed it and Tom looked retarded.
Compare the three previous intros (Toms 1-3, I believe) and judge for yourself:

/End pointless juvenile fanboy rant. :3

Toonami blew post Moltar. :nono:
In all seriousness, Tom 1 was alright, but after that stupid week long "Death of Tom" event I stopped caring.
-
I liked the Space Ghost Coast to Coast intro, but I also like Space Ghost Coast to Coast, so as a separate unit I prefer Toonami (Tom 1-3).
-
Toonami with Moltar was legit. Toonami with Tom 1 was alright. Toonami with Tom 2 I actually liked. Post Tom 2 I didn't like Tom, but I liked the computer chick. The last one was really dumb.
-
In the last link you posted, Tom has a beer belly so he's cool.

Is it just me or does that sound like one of FreeSpace 2's beams?

Tom 2 was probably the coolest, yea. Tom 1 was short and chubby so he was awesome. Tom 3 looked like they kind of lost the plot, Tom 4 was retarded.

I'm curious as to what brought this on. You know, four years after the fact.
-
Hey, at least Steve Blum ended Toonami with a "Bang." That made everything worthwhile in my book.

Dunno, happened upon it and remembered how annoyed I was at the last format. :)

Heh I remember the old days... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHORiWcYzEY)

That show was one of the few reasons I continued to watch Cartoon Network. Toonami needed more UC gundam.
-
cartoon network has been on a dark downward spiral since January of 2007.
-
Actually, they've had several new shows over the past year or so that seem to be creating a sort of mini-Renaissance. I've heard great stuff about things like Regular Show and Adventure Time, and Sym-Bionic Titan was basically Genndy Tartakovsky doing mecha, which equals win.
-
Regular Show and Adventure Time have given me some small amount of hope.
-
I actually kind of like Generator Rex. It's ZOMGTOTALLYRADICAL but it's a fun show.
I guess the biggest problem me and most other people have with CN is the whole Cartoon Network: Real bit, thought they're probably trying to re brand themselves as CN and ditch the "Cartoon Network" moniker.
-
well, there is that and ditching all of the good shows they had (Megas, Samurai Jack, etc) and replacing them with **** (totally needed reality programing in cartoon format), and re-branding themselves as a kids channel, i.e. Nickelodeon, rather than a cartoon channel. I suppose I should be thankful they still have adult swim, but they haven't had any decent anime for the last three/four years so I haven't really watched it much.
They used to have style, now they have ****. I mean hell, just look at those old bumps that were linked earlier in the thread. they peaked somewhere between 2001 and 2003, and died in 2007, it's a damn tragedy cause Cartoon Network was my favorite channel back then, now I can hardly bring myself to look at it.
-
Hey, Samura Jack was NOT that good. The story was decent, the art style was cool, the action was awesome, but the pacing was terrible. As a friend of mine who's an animation buff put it, it was a show made by animators - so it had lots of great animation and shots, but not a director amongst them to tie it all together.
tl;dr: nostalgia = everything you liked when you were a kid is better than everything everyone likes now.

This is a fair point, and holds true for most all the shows I watched on old CN.
Except for Megas. Nothing beats Megas.

I loved Samurai Jack. It's probably one of my favorites out of all the shows on Cartoon Network before it went to ****.

except I felt that way at the time, and I wasn't a kid.

Yeah, I'm gonna call shenanigans on this...I've seen the whole series fairly recently, and the pacing in most episodes is fantastic. Far more deliberate than your average American animated series, sure...but an episode like the one with the tower and the archers, with that sequence of Jack blindfolding himself and "seeing" the world through sound? ****ing amazing.

nice

Well to be fair, Megas had some pretty stiff animation. Samurai Jack I watched for the action and animation, Megas I watched for the story and the humor.

#BringBackToonami (https://twitter.com/#!/adultswim/status/187004036824834049)
-
Adult Swim officially posted on their twitter that if you want it back, do the retweet of #BringBackToonami as they are trying to figure out how much demand there is.
For those not in the know. Adult Swim was taken over on April Fools by Toonami making a return with most of the Tom 3 and classic line up
along with some new bumpers and reviews. Steve Blum and several other anime VA's support the return. It's hit the #2 trending thing on twitter
about 3 times in the last 48 hours.
-
the first time ever that I have actually wished I had a twitter account.

Same boat as bob.

We're over 12K retweets and still going.
Made a poster that's been picked up by some places.

What the hell is this Toonami you are speaking of?
-
There's this thing called Google.
-
To save Googling time, Toonami was an action-oriented cartoon block on the US Cartoon Network that ran from 1997 to 2008. It was particularly known for its stylistic promos and bumps, as well as its mascot character TOM, voiced for most of its run by the prolific voice actor Steve Blum. The block was probably responsible for introducing anime to several million American kids, and its older-skewing "Midnight Run" block on Saturdays eventually evolved into the anime portion of [adult swim]. Suffice it to say that a bunch of people have a huge amount of nostalgia for it, and would definitely love to see it return.
