Title: FS2 Open debris effects problem...
Post by: Unlimited2001 on April 12, 2011, 09:28:29 am
Hi at all! I've installed my FS2 retail version, and have applied all FS2Open packs and MediaVPS. Now I have FS2 really good, but I have a small problem with graphics...when I destroy a ship, the debris this cause, are corrupted, there instead of electric shocks on surface of debris, I see only flashing textures!Why...?There's a solution? These are my settings on launcher:

Graphics: OpenGL
Resolution: 1920X1080
Depth:32bit
Texture filter: Trilinear
Anisotropic: 16X
AA: 16X
General Settings: High
Use large textures: Enabled
Fix Distortion problem: Enabled

I have MediaVPS 3.6.12 with upgraded component MV_Assets.3612.vp, MV_Effects.3612.vp and  MV_Root.3612.vp inside the main MediaVPS folder, and all suggested "Features" settings for this mod...

Thanks a lot!!!

Yes, a Radeon HD5770...is this the problem?

It's a known issue with some ATI cards. Try updating your drivers; if that doesn't work we may have a special fix VP around.

I understand...I have the latest Catalyst drivers...and where I can ask a special fix for this problem?Thank you

Please read the FSO FAQ stickied here and post a log.

I'm not sure a log is going to tell us anything - this is a known issue with ATI cards. We just have to post the ma_sdrfix VP if someone's got it.

Please read the FSO FAQ stickied here and post a log.

Ok, but in the list of FAQ, where is my problem? And, where I can generate a log??Sorry, but I'm still a beginner! :)

Damn, I can't find the log file...I have Win7 64Bit!

There are instructions for just that case in the post Jeff Vader linked to. Read them carefully.

Yes, I've found instructions, but when I try to run debug mode in windows, the game won't start and crash to desktop, and the link to the file, this: "Download this file and place it to your \freespace2\data\ folder. Then, do exactly what what you did when creating the first fs2_open.log." isn't active...

Search for the fs2_open.log and see if you've got one generated already.

Yes, in my "C:\games\freespace2\data" folder, I have this log file...It seems contain the previous error, when I try to start in debug mode...

the link to the file, this: "Download this file and place it to your \freespace2\data\ folder. Then, do exactly what what you did when creating the first fs2_open.log." isn't active...
Well, it would be an empty file, so it's not that big a loss. And you'll notice the part saying that you don't need to do that **** unless you've specifically been asked to do that ****. And we just asked for the regular fs2_open.log. Which you've now posted.

Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'e:\tango1_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0x4c25221e
Found root pack 'e:\tangoA_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0x2e10c984
Found root pack 'e:\warble_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0xd85c305d
You don't need to have any cds in your drives.

Also, are you sure you're not experiencing the fourth issue from the bottom under Graphical issues (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.msg1180356#msg1180356)? The "Damage lightning looks weird." issue?

Ok, but I must repeat the debug mode now?Or the log file I've been posted is correct? Thanks a lot, and sorry again, I'm Italian, and my English is not the best!:-)

Download this - http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/ma-sdrvfix.rar - and extract it to your MVPs directory.

I mean, it sounds like you have the issue where damage lightning makes textures completely white. And that is the "Damage lightning looks weird." issue. And the FAQ contains instructions on solving it. Please try the solution in the FAQ. Use a normal build. If the problem persists, we'll think of something else.

Okok, I undestand, but isn't this the issue, the problem is on the debris after an enemy ship explode, the pieces of the ship are crossed by electric shock, but in my case the textures that compose them, flashing white...anyway, I tried to put the "ma-sdrvfix" file in MVPs directory, but to no avail...

Exactly what I meant.

Troubling. Sorry for a dumb question, but you did remember to extract the .vp from the .rar and didn't just put the rar in \mediavps_3612\ ?
Title: Re: FS2 Open debris effects problem...
Post by: Unlimited2001 on April 14, 2011, 04:35:26 am
Ok, yes sure, I've extracted the file from the .rar...but the problem is the same. I see the electric shocks on the debris, but also flashing textures...
No other solutions guys?Isn't a big problem, but is very annoying...
Ok, then I must stay with the wreckage of ships flashing ... :sigh: Thanks anyway for all the advice!

Yeah, uh, that shader pack should have fixed it. If you want to, you can in theory try this shader pack (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/ma-wevyoldshaders.zip) I pieced together from the 3.6.10 MediaVPs for my own personal use. Just extract the .vp file to your \mediavps_3612\ directory.

Yeah, I can confirm this problem, and give a more detailed error report.

I reinstalled Windows 7 64-bit fresh on this system just yesterday, after a full format and restart. I'm running an ATI 5770 (everything at factory settings, not forcing anything at the card level), and am running the very latest drivers (11.3). I installed Freespace 2 (GOG version), used the automated installer to get The Works, and am running the main campaign using the MediaVPs_3612 mod. There's basically no room for user error here.

On floating debris and heavily damaged capital ships, any polygons near the blue lightning-arc effect are briefly coloured solid 'fullbright' white. I've not seen the problem with any other effect, just polys near the blue arcs.

I've tried both fix-files provided here. Just unzipped them and dropped them in my MediaVPs_3612 folder. First one, then the other, then both together, but none work so far.

Hopefully this issue gets fixed soon, as it's probably the one gripe I have with the whole game.

Except that it's almost certainly an issue with that particular series of cards. I run a 5470, and do not have those issues.

Another shader set to try would be the new per-fragment shaders. Please unpack the attached file in mediavps_3612\data\effects

Note that, in order to use these, you will need a recent nightly build (those can be found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=173.0).

I highly recommend that you revert to the 11.2 CATs.  I too am running Win7-64 on a 5770 and when I upgraded to 11.3s when they came out and immediately started getting FSO problems.  I was getting some debris texture anomalies, but also the game would lock up on me when I got some major action like large explosions or once when I was getting slammed by AAA.  I also think that it gave me some sound anomalies.  At first I thought that it was due to a new Knightly build so I reverted to what I'd been using before but the problems persisted.  I have since reverted to 11.2 but I don't think that I've had the chance to play again since.

Yeah, I agree that it's almost certainly an issue with these drivers. I was playing another game (Spiral Knights) which was exhibiting a shockingly similar issue. Certain areas would cast light which would cause polygons to turn completely black.

I've rolled back to 11.2 and will see if that improves things.

Edit: Yeah, just tested it. It's definitely a driver issue with 11.3.

If you have Windows 7 you can try the 11.4 preview driver and see if that helps, though I doubt it will, as most changes in it are performance boosts for the HD 6XXX cards. You can get it at http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst114earlypreview.aspx (http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst114earlypreview.aspx)

Sorry people, but I've tryed to install Catalyst 11.2 instead 11.3, but without results! The debris are flashing, like before...

Sorry, but with 11.2 Catalyst, you don't have debris flashing?I've tryed but without results...thanks!

I'm sticking with 10.4 until something forces me to change. You could of course try that or other old versions.

:bump:
I know that its considered somewhat gauche to quote yourself, but I figured that an update was in order.  I hadn't had the change to play FSO for several weeks (just bad timing with RL stuff) until just yesterday and haven't had any problems with 11.2 since reverting.  The full 11.4 came out recently, but I'm somewhat reluctant to take the plunge on that one.
