Title: The day I trolled my comp.
Post by: MatthTheGeek on April 18, 2011, 06:20:01 pm
Some of you may or may not remember this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,71787.0.html). You think it was bad ? This was back with my old rig, an old cheap laptop with a 2.2GHz dual core, an intelgrated 965 and 4 GB RAM.

I just committed the offence again. This time with a netbook, or how I like to call it, crapbook. Intel Atom monocore 1.6 GHz, Intelgrated 945 and 1 GB RAM.

Sensible souls please do not look ahead, as some or all pictures might and will chock you. Let's go for a trip in 1fpsland.

I, for once, won't call for lvlshot.

Well Matt, the only thing I can tell which was "crappy" about your old computer was the graphics set it had. Other than that, it ought to blow mine out of the water...

-1.6GHz Core Duo
-2GB RAM
-Go7600

Yeah...

Thaeris, almost exact specs as my old laptop. Thats actually a pretty good configuration, just increase RAM from 2 to 4 GB and play around with shader and shadow settings, they tend to bite the biggest chunks out of the Geforce 7600 Go. I'm just surprised yours didnt burn down yet, mine loved to burn at 80 celcius whenever i ran any game.

Same with mine, only it's my desktop, it runs 1GB RAM, Core 2 Duo @ 1.66 GHz and a GeForce 8600.

Funny thing? It runs Delenda Est at 30+ FPS. Impossible but true.

It's an HP laptop from 2007. Unfortunately, we got it from Best Buy ("we" being my parents, arming me with a device with which to send me off to college). Overall, it ought to be a nice machine, 17-in widescreen with a number pad (can't live without the latter). However, I think the mobo can only handle 2GB, or some other such reason for it being limited to 2 gig. Perhaps I should find a more adept technician than myself at some point to re-analyze the issue... And yes, it did die once. Sent it to HP, and it came back good as new.

The real shortcoming is not my computer, but the OS. Critically thinking, 2GB is a LOT of power. Despite the fact that many of us may consider the progams and OS's which really screamed on only 64MB of RAM seriously outdated (and may not at all be wrong for saying as such), the fact is that the OS involved didn't need up to half of your computing power to run. There's... just something very wrong with that.

Hell those backgrounds are starting to remind me of Quake II and the level Final Showdown.

That sounds like the computer I currently use, only mine has some sort of integrated graphics card. It does make modding a bit difficult since large textures take a few minutes to open in photoshop and the screen doesn't update very quickly. Plus no matter what you do, every thing you make looks bad in-game.

Sounds a lot like my computer as well; I don't know why the OP's screenies are so crap, maybe even having a 128MB GPU helps a lot! The good thing is that it has support for 2 monitors, the bad thing is that I don't have two monitors... :P

What campaign is that?

Played all of AoA last night, and it was cool - but Bei is so "I never get excited" sometimes...also, a few audio voice samples were missing, don't know whether they weren't detected or what, but it didn't matter. Only once in the last mission did I have to lower the settings so that things were starting to resemble the pics in this thread, but not quite! And that was with more (large) ships that had heaps of polies.

Downloading WiH 1 as soon as possible! ;)

The only sound-related error that regularely poped up in the forum (and which I experienced myself too) is problems with the music in Universal Truth, if you restart the mission. The VAed lines should play just fine. Did you check if your bp-audio files got corrupted during download?

You probably have a gpu. Hence your comp is about 10x better than mine, by a far margin.

You don't have a GPU?  At all?  Wow, where did you find a desktop/laptop computer without one in the last 10 years?

(Also, this is my first post in these forums.  Hooray. :))

Integrated GPUs don't count as actual GPUs.

Yes, they do.  They are not usually very good, but they are still GPUs nonetheless.

Indeed, but when I said 'don't count', I meant 'for gaming purposes'
FSO is quite friendly to the integrated GPUs, however. I remember playing 3.6.7 with a steady smooth framerate.

Then again, things back then were different...

Why do you think I needed testers ? :P
