So i got most of the way through the FRED walkthrough, past all the SEXP's thankfully, and the file decides to destroy itself whilst saving.
Thinking i knew enough, i went on to create my own mission from scratch. Spent the entire weekend on it, clicked save earlier, and it does the same again, file destorys itself. 'Error whilst saving' it says in its smuggest computery voice.   !!!
GRRRR!!!
ARGGH!!!
AHHH!!!!!
Does it happen to anyone else? If so why, and how can i prevent it. I'll keep a back up file from now on, but is there another solution?
Thanks, pete

There actually is a backup file in the missions folder. It will have the same name as the regular .fs2 file that was your mission, but with a .bak extension. Just change the file extension, and voila!

That doesn't actually explain WHY it screws up in the first place........

That has happened to me once on one BWO mission. I entered a special explosion value that was too high and POOF :)
Just make a simple mission. One Hercules Mark 2 VS one Mara. Does it save or not? Ok, now two wings of fightes. Now four. Now a crusier. Now a pair of Corvettes blasting each other.

Never really experienced this, except that one time when I made an event that was too large for the game or editor to handle, and of course, the periodic windows crashes. :p

Windows has this bizarre ability to crash without any input from the user. Thankfully FRED2 hasn't crashed on me whilst putting together a mission, however FS2 has crashed with monotonous regularity recently and I can't work out why........
But do as Ice says and check that you're not asking it to do too much. FRED has a tendency to whine at you over the most petty of things.

Doing an error check before saving couldn't hurt. (Not everything FRED2 complains about is an error to FS2 though. Like using set-subsystem-strength on Alpha 1.) As far as having errors while saving, one thing to keep an eye on is your free HD space. And make sure you're not trying to save to the FS2 CD or something. ;) I don't think I've ever had that error, but I have had some other odd errors including one odd error I can't quite remember but which required editing the mission in wordpad to fix. (Think it was a weird total number of ships problem, did some weird stuff and deleted a ship but it didn't change the number.)

Thanks Sesquipedalian, i would have probably given up on FRED for ever if you hadnt told me that tip.
My first proper mission is done now, just need to chance some spelling errors. Quite proud really. :D
And for Icefire, i seem to remember i had set a docking ring to explode without a shockwave, might have been the cause.
