Hi,
First time post here, someone pointed me to FS2O and I have been looking into installing the mods but need some help/guide to doing this because I have no idea what I am doing.
Any help is appreciated :)
Thanks.

Mods go into C:/Games/FreeSpace 2/<Modfolder>, assuming you installed FS2 in that directory (it shouldn't be in program files due to UAC).
You then select the mod folder on the MOD tab in the launcher.
YAY

Also, :welcome:

Well I know that the mods go into that folder in the directory, it's where to install FS2 Open files and where to put the launcher I downloaded. The files I have are fred2_open and fs2_open (pdb and exe files) and FS2 Open Launcher 5.5g.
And thanks for the welcome. :)

Erm. You should have FreeSpace 2 installed somewhere. I will refer to that directory as \freespace2\ . The fs2_open executables and the Launcher should be in that directory. That is, \freespace2\ .
Each mod should be in its own subdirectory under \freespace2\ . So, Wings of Dawn (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71092.0) should be in \freespace2\WoD\ , Blue Planet: Age of Aquarius should be in \freespace2\blueplanet\ and so forth. Each mod directory should contain one or many .vp files, possibly a mod.ini file and possibly a bitmap picture that the Launcher will use.
For example: let us assume you want to install Wings of Dawn (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71092.0). You do want to install Wings of Dawn (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71092.0). The Council of Elrond demands so. You'll start by going to the \freespace2\ directory. There, you will create a subdirectory \freespace2\WoD\ . Then, you will travel to the Wings of Dawn release thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71092.0) here at HLP, download all the files and extract the relevant files from the archives to \freespace2\WoD\ . So, in the end you should have a directory \freespace2\WoD\ , which contains three .vp files, a mod.ini file, a bitmap and a credits.txt.

OK so I followed your instructions re. Wings of Dawn and when I tried to run I got this warning box:

An easy way to install a lot of good mods as well as the MediaVPs is to use the FreeSpace Open Installer. Google it.
The reason you're getting that error is that you don't have the 3.6.12 MVPs installed. Mods like Blue Planet, Vassago's Dirge, and Wings of Dawn require them.
Don't worry, everything's a lot simpler than it looks. Stick with it!
(Also, don't forget to run mods using a release build with an R, not a debug build with a D.)

Looked up the installer, thanks it has been a huge help. :)

Hi
I've run into some issues after using the FS2O Installer. Every mod i try to run with the launcher gives me a message with different numbers or warnings. Example below:
Warning: The current active mod has generated 68 warnings and/or errors during startup. These could have been caused by anything from incorrectly formatted table files to corrupt models. While Freespace Open will attempt to compensate for these issues it cannot guarantee a trouble-free gamplay experience. Source code project staff cannot provide assistance or support for these problems....
Is there something I've done or is it an out of date installer I've used?

Should be a very easy fix. Please select the FS2_Open_3.6.12d_INF_SSE2 build in your launcher - make sure you get the one with a D, not an R - run it until you hit the problems, then go to FreeSpace2/data/, open the file called fs2_open.log, and post the contents here inside code tags.
Once you do that, it should be easy to fix.
-
If you've used the online installer, no, you should have the most recent versions of everything installed.
However, given your previously posted error, please go here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.0 and use the information in the last post to generate an fs2_open.log and post it here. In addition, please tell us what
--your OS version and
--your GPU
are.

Hi
Right, I've attached the log. I'm running on Window 7 (32bit) and have a Radeon HD 5770 GPU

One problem here is that you need to change the cardinal spear mod.ini (a text file inside the cardinalspear directory). You need to open it, find the line that starts with "secondarylist", and change the "mediavps" there to "mediavps_3612".
Also, Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 800x600 with 32-bit color...
Initializing WGL...
Requested WGL Video values = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 32, double-buffer: 1
Actual WGL Video values = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 32, double-buffer: 1
OpenGL Vendor : ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL Renderer : ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
OpenGL Version : 4.0.10317 Compatibility Profile Context
A card as powerful as the 5770 can handle much larger resolutions than 800x600. You should play the game with a resolution of AT LEAST 1024x768.
Also, you should update your drivers. Oh, and you should really enable the "-post_processing" and "-normal" flags for added graphical goodness.
-
Yeah, I've changed that line and increased the resolution, then when i tried to run the cardinal spear mod again it started and gave me another warning telling me that "68 ship model types were missing" or along those lines.

I would honestly just skip Cardinal Spear for now. It's probably incompatible with the 3.6.12 MVPs. But you can try altering the mod.ini as instructed and see if that fixes the issue.

Someone else was having Cardinal Spear problems too. It probably pouts among the newer MediaVPs because it has its own table stuff. Or something. I dunno. Fun campaign, but if it doesn't work...
