Title: Subspace pallete?
Post by: Scuddie on May 13, 2002, 07:06:27 pm
I need to know how to modify the (supposedly non-existant) pallete.  I have the fred2 addon for the missing gamepalette-subspace.pcx file, and what I saw was butt ugly (no offense to the creator :)).  It looked like the original subspace mapping from fs1, but it wasn't transparent, and it looked like 3 or 4 cylinders attached to eachother.  It was also WAY too dark.  Anyway, I'd like to know if anyone has fixed this, or if they can.  I can help also if needed (purdee good at PS).

EDIT:  Also, I would LOVE to have subspace be a different color.

If I am understanding you correctly, you are a bit confused on one very improtant point.  The gamepallete-subspace.pcx file is not used to actually draw the subspace background.  It just has to exist for the game not to crash.  The file actually used to make the subspace background is called noise01.pcx and can be found in the maps section of sparky.vp.

The strange tearing effects are something of a flaw in the model files for subspace; these were not designed properly for some reason. I think it works fine if you simply take the FS1 subspace_big.pof and subspace_small.pof models and drop those into the FS2 model directory. As for the darkness, I don't think I understand what you mean. The subspace colors can be changed by simply applying a color saturation or color replacement effect to the noise01.pcx and noise02.pcx files.

Styxx fixed the subspace tearing problem I think.  And of course its from FreeSpace 1....thats where it was used :)
