Title: How do I forward ports?
Post by: Marcov on May 23, 2011, 07:05:23 am
Noob question !

This may not be related at all to any of the HLP sites or IRC, but as I see it's required to play multiplayer games.

I need a detailed description on how to forward parts. As in, tell me what buttons to press.

I need a description explaining it from which webpage to go to, what to type, etc. until I get my ports forwarded to the required ones for multiplayer.

Please help !

BTW I've tried Linksys and used the general 192.168.1.1 router and then just simply CAN'T try any combination at all! Whether it be admin/password, blank/password, admin/blank etc. they simply don't work. It just sticks to the annoying Log In popup.

If you do not know your routers' password, then you're pretty much out of luck.

How do I find my routers' password?

I dunno. Ask the person who owns the router.

Isn't it that you have to go to Linksys by typing your Default gateway and to find that out press Run on the Start menu then type "cmd" then type "ipconfig" then it should say it then type it on your internet browser and then Linksys shows up?

Then they ask you for your Username and password, which I don't know, or people say it's "admin" then blank etc. yet they don't work. What now??

See, the problem is, we cannot tell you how to open ports, or how to set up the router for port forwarding unless you a) tell us exactly which model of router it is, and b) you have ACCESS to the router. For which you will need a username and password, apparently. Which you will have to get from the person who OWNS the router.

Please keep in mind I'm not sure I get what you're defining.

However, just in case, this is what it says when I go to Linksys (and press Cancel to the annoying undoable Log In popup):

Is this what you're trying to figure out?

No, not really. See, that tells us nothing about the Make or Model # (which would be on the router itself. And by that I mean -physically-, not as in connection interface)

Also, be advised that port forwarding (except in RARE circumstances) is only necessary in order to HOST a multiplayer game. It should not be necessary just to connect to existing game. The instructions (as outlined in this post (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=63609.0)) specify that port-forwarding is only needed for Hosting.

Thanks...

...but why aren't there any servers at all on the "Games" list?

Because there is not a singularly "permanent" dedicated server.

So, Games only take place when people co-ordinate (such as the BP Multi Tests) or jay-randomly via IRC of enough people willing and bored enough.

(Wednesday's and Saturday's are usually go days for Multi to take place)

Eventually, the hope is that we can have a dedicated Standalone server somehow.
