Title: Installing Freespace Open
Post by: Aclimator on May 23, 2011, 03:43:50 pm
So, I have a few questions:

What is the difference between FSO and FSSCP?

Also, which do I want? As well as how to go about installing them.

FSO == FSSCP, the two names are used interchangeably. FSO stands for FreeSpace Open, which is the exe produced by the FSSCP (FreeSpace Source Code Project). Installing the FSO goodies is rather easy, you can use either the automated Installer found here (http://fsoinstaller.com), or the manual guide found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=47640.0).

Note that our main mirror for downloads, freespacemods.net, is ATM down due to a malware infection. If you have trouble locating a file, post here, and we'll see to it that you'll get set up.

If you should run into issues after installing stuff, this FAQ (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.0) should be your first port of call. Alternatively, the hard-light IRC channel (link is in my sig) is always open for tech support business.

FSO is FreeSpace Open. It refers to the game engine, and that's what you want to download.

FSSCP is the Freespace Source Code Project, the team working on the game engine. They're the one making the thing you want to download refered above.

Here is the executable, aka the game engine. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70692.0)

You'll probably also want the Media VPs (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0), improved graphics from FSU[ (Freespace Upgrade Project).

Keep in mind that FSO and the MVPs aren't standalones, you need the original game installed to use them. If you haven't it yet, you can buy it for very cheap at GoodOldGames.

EDIT: Ninja'd. Debug ninjas are too fast for my poor skillz.
