That's right, FreeSpace 2 was the game chosen for July's "Reinstall" feature in PC Gamer. Not only that, but none other than my favorite gaming columnist Andy Mahood wrote the article! This wasn't just a romp through the vanilla install you get from the Good Old Games release either, no, Mr. Mahood knew better. He's apparently well aware of the Hard-Light modding community, and had nothing but amazing things to say about us. I don't feel it'd be kosher to reprint the entire article (go buy a copy when it hits shelves!), but I'll mention some of the highlights.
...I took advantage of one of PC Gaming's most impressive modding communities...
...(after installing with the FSO installer) you not only get the simulation's latest gameplay enhancements, you get a space shooter that looks surprisingly comfortable on modern PCs.
Distorted and stretched 1024x768 screens with blocky-looking 3D models and streaky exhaust trails gave way to detailed, 16:9 space environments with high-poly spacecraft and spectacular special effects.
...the quality of the new visual enhancements offered by the mod completely floored me.
Inventive pre- and -post-Great War scenarios...will keep you going for weeks or months...rival the original release for gameplay depth and entertainment value (the gorgeous Blue Planet mod had me completely hooked from its scene-setting opening mission).
We all do what we do, a lot of the times just because we love what we do. But hearing this kind of appreciation never hurts either. Props to Mr. Mahood for such a flattering article.
If you just found us via PC Gamer, feel free to jump on IRC and say hi. There are links in my signature to several popular rooms, and most have users 24/7.

we've got yet another freespace lover
-
That's rad. It's good to know that people outside of here haven't forgotten about FreeSpace.
...What would be better is if we could get him to be an active member here. :nervous:

No, no it isn't. -- Zacam
And hitting thumbs up with StumbleUpon could only help. :)
EDIT: Link appears to have been nuked... darn.

Yeah, I think it was because it is questionable to share magazine scans on teh interwebs. Legally, that is.

Every previous time you've posted that link a moderator has nuked it for copyright violation. You should probably stop. :nervous:

Ah. Got it. @ Mods: You know, PMs... I do listen.
-
If you listen, then why can't you observe when your posts have been altered?
But fair enough. I suppose not everybody re-reads their own posts or what not. I will endeavor to make the process more clear.
But it goes without saying (because it's already said in the Policies) that linking copyrighted material is a no-no.

Excellent, attract more players :)

I'll have to pick up a copy of this when it gets released. :)

This just completely made my day :D

Nice article, and the first time I've gotten a copy of PC Gamer in years.
It's funny, though, that for the newsstand price, you could get a copy of FS2 from GOG and have around $2.50 left over.
-
First PC gamer sitting in my shelf for roughly a decade, ironically next to the issue back in the elder days when FS2 was being given a walkthrough.
-
So I presume the article will be available here once it's published online (probably in 5 weeks or so)?

If they publish all the reinstalls online, probably so.

Not that I've seen. :(
