10:22:38 jobttuta: man, i hope hades either learns to map or gets a mapper
10:22:49 jobttuta: kid's got some talent, he should be able to go the distance with his work
10:22:58 MatthTheGeek: agreed
10:23:06 MatthTheGeek: his logistic ship is badass
10:23:25 MatthTheGeek: definitely on its way to become a classic fan-made ship
10:23:43 jobttuta: he shouldn't rely on esarai to do it
10:23:55 jobttuta: esarai's great, and part of the reason esarai's great is cause he can go all the way from mesh to uv to texture
10:24:01 jobttuta: if hades could do that too, it'd be great
10:24:45 MatthTheGeek: and I think it's moch more awarding for him to work on a ship 100% his own rather than HTLing projects where his creativity is bounded by the original retail design and criticism from members
10:24:50 MatthTheGeek: much*
10:25:00 MatthTheGeek: -awarding + rewarding
10:25:03 MatthTheGeek: sounds better
HADES LEARN TO UVMAP
it'd be chill

It's more a matter of tedious, boring, slow-paced work which despite making things so much easier for yourself (or others) when texturing, feels almost non-rewarding. Leaning to get UV mapping right (in my opinion) goes a lot faster than learning to model. It's still like having a 3-hour mise-en-place when cooking for your family, before you can finally start making a great dinner though. Some game companies hire specific freelance UV-mappers who can do the process far more rapidly to safe the other modellers a lot of trouble.

LEAVE HADES ALOOOOOOONEEEEE

Shouldn't we keep pointless threads limited to ... ehrm...
Let's just not do them.

Pointless threads would be awful. Fortunately this thread has a very important point, namely encouraging a good modeler to pick up a valuable skill that'll help his models get finished. The MVPs team has been saying the same thing.
Try to keep pointless posts limited to, ehrm, let's just not do them.
We're here to cheer for Hades. hades gooooo

I do still have that nagging feeling that nothing will be accomplished with this.
Then again, I always have been a pessimist.
-
If Hades doesn't want to uvmap, that's cool. It would be awesome if he did, however, because most meshes get hung up at the mapping/texturing stage of the workflow.
If you don't think the man can do it, go be a pessimist somewhere else!

its about hades after all :p

Hey, Hades picked up modeling from scratch in basically a year. He can do that, he can map, even if mapping is a ****load more dull. Guy cares about his models.
-
Stickied.

Stickied.
woot? rofl
-
I honestly agree. I picked up modeling almost a year ago as well, and he's well above my level of skill right now.
That said, it would be awesome if he could UV map and texture his stuff as well though if he doesn't want to, I'll be more than happy to paint it with my wonderful neon-colored paint cans.
-
Stickied.
You might want to unsticky a lot of other stuff in order for people to be able to make this thread out from the vast sea of other stickied threads.
-
Is this about not doing tiles?
-
I guess, it's stickied for the lulz and until Hades replies.
It wouldn't make any sense to stickie this kind of thread for real real. It's just for play play.
-
Is this about not doing tiles?
No, Hades is wise to the ways of not doing tiles. It's just a cheerleading squad.
-
I shall throw my hat in the air for Hades.
-
The thing is...
Hades DOES know how to UV map.
He just refuses to do it for his models.
God knows why.
-
I do remember Hades mentioning on the forums here and there a few times he models for himself, because he finds it fun. It might be UV mapping just is not fun for him.
-
UV mapping is definitely not fun.
Certainly ranks in the "most tedious and boring ****" category.
-
We're here to make it fun!
just put on some nyan.cat and

This. Oh so this. :D

:wakka:
texturing is fun though. (IMO)
-
Ah UVing... the one step that makes or breaks people even more than textures. It takes a lot of skill to UV fast and good, being able to understand how a mesh unfolds so that you can get maximum exposure for the minimum of waste. Have pity on those who have to UV for a living :p!
-
I wish you could teach AutoUV how to do that.
-
texturing is worst, I just can't get my ships to look the way I want them to.
-
You can be ANYTHING hades

Hell if I can learn to do it (Believe me I struggled with it a lot at first) then I'm certain Hades can do it if he applied himself. On the plus side the UV unwrapper in the latest version of blender is a heck of a lot better than previous versions. A lot less stretching when using the conformal method. I was able to UV map the new Ennead and Herc 3 models in about a day and a half each with it. Texturing is another matter though.
-
I know how to uvmap, in fact, I've even started uvmapping the Hemera already. I just don't know texture-making worth squat.
-
Fine then! I guess we just made this big thread for you all for nothing! I say we charge him the bill for this little party.
-
There. Still relevant.

Uvmapping isn't that boring or tedious, what I do find more is texturing panels and rivets. Oh and the actually conversion to where it works is still a major boring.
