Title: In final stages of preparing gameupdates.org mirror - suggestions?
Post by: jr2 on May 26, 2011, 06:38:03 pm
I'm 7-zipping up all the folders etc... any suggestions before I make a stupid mistake?

Basically, I ran the Open Installer on an empty FreeSpace2 directory and I'm 7zipping that + a bunch of campaigns and mods (separately so they can choose to install them) and uploading to gameupdates.org (http://gameupdates.org).

I've got the latest nightlies in a separate folder, I've got launcher 5.5g...

Ideas?

I also have links to different places here and to GOG.com to buy FS2 and if they want FS1+ST.

I will put in the readme that they need to either have a pre-patched game or patch to v1.20 with a link to the patch.

I'm also going to include the latest version of OpenAL, at least for Windows, maybe for other versions as well.

EDIT: And what are good settings for 7-zip?  Rigth now I'm using:

Format:               7z
level:                   Ultra
method:               LZMA
Dictionary size:     64 MB
Word size:            273
Solid Block size:     4 GB
Threads:                2/1
Compress shared files: ON (compress files that are open for editing in other applications)

EDIT: Found some problems:

mod.ini files referring to mediavps instead of MediaVPs_3612  -- fixed

Some mods residing in sub-subfolders... e.g. FS2dir\Transcend\Transcend   -- will this work??

Well let's hope I got it all fixx0red I think, put the mods so they are in their appropriate sub-folders instead of sub-subfolders, 7-zipping now, will start uploading sometime this weekend probably.

I wouldn't recommend it. For Sync, there's my updated version based on what I read from the thread with fixes and tested to work for Antipodes 8 and the latest nightlies if that helps at all. The original version will not work with Antipodes 8.

Link to Sync (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=75967.msg1507131#msg1507131)

As far as compression goes, make sure that it's small enough to download yet fast enough so that it won't be a pain to extract.

Hmm... the other Installer campaigns all work?  Just asking, if you haven't tested them, that's fine.  :)

I haven't tested them with the recent builds or mediavps.

Another quick question:  The campaigns that aren't designated for mediavps, and don't have a mod.ini included, would it be good to stick a mod.ini in there for mediavps_3612 or would that create breakage?

If there weren't designed to use mediavps, then they might break.  Or they might not.  Probably safer not to add a mod.ini.

Also, a new FSPort release will be out any day now, so you might want to hold off a bit.

:banghead: 4 hours of 7-zip compression all for nothing...

Compressed 8GB of Installer stuff to ~4GB.

Oh well.  Guess I'll have to do it again.

Can't wait for the release!  :)

Interesting, I'm playing through FSPort again right now. It's already running off of the latest mediavps and looks great. I'm curious what could be upgraded. The only thing I can think of is that a few of the command room anis are still low res.

Probably more about bugfixes. Latest FSPort version was a bugfest.

Yup.  Although there are several enhancements... not least of which are mjn.mixael's new cbanis.
