My buddy Mark is trying to use FSO... but it won't install.
He just bought FS2 from GoG, downloaded and ran the installer, but no matter where he points it, everything is grayed out, and he is unable to install.
What's going on?
-
Just making sure, did he select the directory where FreeSpace is located manually? Despite looking similar whether you're using CDs or GoG, you need to manually choose a directory before you're allowed to continue any further. That shouldn't be the problem if you're using GoG, though, I think.
EDIT: Did he click "The Works", or is he unable to?

This is more than slightly vague.
I can read your post in two ways. The first infers this problem:
GoG installer of FS2 is not working. Everything [what?] is greyed out.
If this is the case:
Send screenshot of exactly what is not working, as many of us have no idea what the GoG installer even looks like, much less what options could possibly be greyed out.
Running installer as Administrator might be necessary if you haven't done this already.
If you have done this already and/or it's still not working right, I'd look at available hard drive space.
The second possible interpretation is that GoG installer installs the game as it should, but you're having trouble getting FSO to work.
If you confirm this to be the case, we can proceed further, but writing elaborate troubleshooting tips without knowing what the problem actually is would be... futile.

He clicked The Works. He installed with GoG, and chose to put it in Program Files (under win XP, NOT Vista or 7). He manually chose where to install, and after choosing "The Works," everything is greyed out, even though nothing is there, and nothing gets installed.
He just tried installing to games/freespace2 but to no avail. Same problem. No matter where he points it, all grey, and only a couple text docs download.

The problem is with Turey's. Not the GoG installer.
And he's admin. He's the only user on the comp.
-
I can probably get him to come to IRC if that helps.
-
It probably would.
-
When he tried to install it to Game/FreeSpace, was the retail data located there as well? IRC is preferable.
-
Resolved.

Yes. Apparently if you choose "The Works" on Turey's with "Update" at the same time, the installer does nothing.
