So after recovering my work from a severe hdd crash on my desktop, I've resumed fleshing out a skirmisher/escort cruiser vessel on my laptop (Blender 2.57b runs quite well on ATI methinks). Here's the current build:
(http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/5999/skirmisher1.png) (http://img11.imageshack.us/i/skirmisher1.png/)
(http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/7378/skirmisher2.png) (http://img835.imageshack.us/i/skirmisher2.png/)
(http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/8628/skirmisher3.png) (http://img846.imageshack.us/i/skirmisher3.png/)
So far, I've thought of a fast moving raider vessel that supports a quick strike with heavy missile swarms and some beam fire, but I'll let Spoon take a gander and think of what other additions can go on this.
-
Looks quite solid, good work
-
It's a really smooth and sleek ship (I love the curves), but isn't this the Challenger?

It's like the Challenger, but it's definitely not the same.

Aha, I see...but don't we already have a ship called the Skirmisher? Not that I'm complaining, because I'm really excited to see what this turns out.
-
Spoon approves of this
I certainly think I could find a use for this ship
-
That ship looks great. It definately looks like an LSF ship for sure. I'd think this would make a great successor to the Skirmisher. It also makes me want to go model something.
/me runs off to model the LSF Knight. :nervous:
-
Maybe call it Duelist or something, since Skirmisher is already in use. Brawler certainly wouldn't fit such a flowing design.
-
ATTENTION DUELISTS: MY HAIR INDICATES THAT HERTAK FIGHTERS ARE ON THE WAY.
-
IT'S TIME TO DU-
actually lets not go there.
-
I don't get it....
-
We have a Skirmisher.
We do not have a Skirimisher*shot*
-
Nice! :D
-
Looking cool
-
Good news is that after converting this model in tris from quads, it's under 4k. I put that into my calculator and it makes a :3
-
Wow that's nice, would be lovely to see lots of 'em on the map without lagging.
-
I don't get it....
References to Yu-Gi-Oh! the Abridged Series.
As for the name, why not Cavalier?
-
Cavalier sounds quite fitting, for this
Terran-made ship with Cyrvan jump drives raider-style ship that AtomicClucker envisions it to be.
-
Duelist or Cavalier sound like fitting names to me
-
my vote is on Cavalier
-
And God said let there be fried chicken, then all rejoiced and produced more pictures:

(http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/7840/new3m.png) (http://img814.imageshack.us/i/new3m.png/)
And a size comparison with one my own fighter models (~30 meters) for a size scale:
(http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/4617/size1.png) (http://img863.imageshack.us/i/size1.png/)
I'll let you guys fight over the name, this ship was envisioned in a role similar to Hussars of the 17+18 centuries played in mounted warfare.
Currently poly count is a short 3.2k, most likely some 4k with tris. The goals is a humble 5-6k range.
-
You have used those polys well excellent work
-
I like it
-
Added some more heavy missiles, for heavy business:
(http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/9783/missiles.png) (http://img825.imageshack.us/i/missiles.png/)
Now, where should a few of those pretty beams go?
-
The front, of course.
-
Forward indeed, as fits a shock jumper.
-
Unless you plan to turn them into hangar doors, the front two rectangles are a pretty natural placements for two beams with doors (like the challengers main beam). Or if there is enough room you could also make it multiple small beams, like the original Skirmisher has.
-
...wow. Simply...amazing. I agree that you should put two beams on the two rectangles, with doors. Maybe you could add a VLS on each of the 'winglets'...those two...stubby things at the end.
Oh and I support Cavalier!
-
I too support Cavalier.
Or if there is enough room you could also make it multiple small beams, like the original Skirmisher has.
I like this idea.
-
Moar pictures and plausible beam placement in red:
(http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/1783/78493036.png) (http://img190.imageshack.us/i/78493036.png/)
(http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/3285/45763049.png) (http://img805.imageshack.us/i/45763049.png/)
And some engines for speediness!
(http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5871/50737262.png) (http://img151.imageshack.us/i/50737262.png/)
Front beams will be big shredders, other beams will be small and swat incoming gnats. Wing stubs could be either some sort of mortar launchers or fixed position weapons.
-
Very...very nice work. I like the cluster of engines, although hopefully they're all different subsystems to make it hell to disable for it's role. Really, really like the look of the whole ship, the wings just...well...balance it out.

I took my inspiration from these guys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swordfish
I don't joke around when I say a good bit of time on research/inspiration makes actual production a lot easier.
-
Dolphins are scary and eat people!
Good call.
-
How about this spot, I marked in green for a smaller support beam? If I don't misread the shape of the ship, from there a beam should still be able to hit in front, unless the enemy is very close, and it could also fire to the sides in at least a 90° angle.

Dolphins are scary and horny creatures
fix'd :p
The name Cavalier seems to be having the most support right now
-
Moar pretties with weapons in place:
(http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/9850/almost1.png) (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/almost1.png/)
(http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3310/almost2.png) (http://img196.imageshack.us/i/almost2.png/)
(http://img804.imageshack.us/img804/398/almost3.png) (http://img804.imageshack.us/i/almost3.png/)
And some quick renders:
(http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/4576/almostrender.png) (http://img26.imageshack.us/i/almostrender.png/)
(http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/995/almostrenderwithstars.png) (http://img851.imageshack.us/i/almostrenderwithstars.png/)
So the last phase is to a final poly reduction then set to work on four or five LODs and debris. After that, it'll be generating UVmaps and wireframes and nice templates so the community can cook-up their own skins.
-
Sweet!
-
Very nice indeed
Now if anyone want to make a sweet texture for this I'd be a happy Spoon
If not, i'll do it myself...
-
Should also mention that in addition to templates, I'll release the blender source files as well if anyone feels like modifying and or creating variants. Templates are currently going to be released in PSD (PS5, lower if requesting) and GIMP formats.
-
Cool! Perhaps that way I'll learn to do something with Blender. Other than Cubes of Death, that is.
-

Oh! Oh! I'll do it! :D
/me gets out the [andrewmeme]NEONPAINTCANS[/andrewmeme]

Then name it LSF Neon.

So, after getting away from a crappy EeePC netbook and working systems back, some good news.
(http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2729/finaled.png) (http://img225.imageshack.us/i/finaled.png/)
It's actually below 4k by 60 or so polies. Ima pleased. A quick question to LODs, how much poly reduction for five levels (LOD0-LOD4)?
I plan to handcraft the LODs instead of merely reduction.
-
Five levels instead of four? Any particular reason to this?
And as far as the model goes, outstanding work.
-

Extra detail, but four is easier. So then four.
Triangulation yields 6-7k, so I'm actually going to try and half the quad/tri levels per LOD level, but this my first time dealing with LODs.
-
Polygons shouldn't really be an issue in Freespace, especially not in WoD. 2-3 lods should be plenty.
-
The HTL sath has like 204k polies for LOD0 and has better performance than the retail Sath.
FSO eats polygons for breakfast.
For something with 6-7k polies, 2-3 LODs will be plenty. I mean, if you do 4-5, the last few will just be boxes at that rate (or you're going to have a really small polygon decrease between levels, which makes it inefficient).
-
Thinking about what you guys said, then the LODs will run as: LOD0-2, so it would amount to 7k--> 3.5k -->1k or less then.
-
I'm sure you're well aware, but the key to successful LODs is that you should never notice a model transition from one LOD to another. A model in close should of course show its full detail, but a model far away should do as little as possible to affect your computer's performance. Responsible LODding in a nutshell. :)
-
Too bad most LOD transitions stick out like a lake of blood in snow from from an above view.
Because really, the whole 'sore thumb' thing is nonsense and not really that noticable in many cases.
-
Too bad most LOD transitions stick out like a lake of blood in snow from from an above view.
SF BASILISK, I'M LOOKING AT YOU.
-
SD RAVANA, YOU TOO.
(no seriously, its LOD1 is the retail one >.>)
-
Go make a better one if you're unhappy.
What are you waiting for.
-
For any textures artists or other modders, here's the finalized base mesh as a raw .blend file for both easier conversion to another format and vice versa. So Andrew, give this a fine paintjob and some flame stripes.
I've started a minor crash course on the art of LOD for games, so the properly built LODs will appear shortly.

Will take a close look at this soon

'Soon' he said
Well, today is the future.

T-t-t-triple post

Needless to say, the texture is some random weapon effect I just pasted on there to get it ingame. It will get a proper texture later.

Missile spam, ho!
-
The missiles all seem to come from the same point, which is a bit of a letdown.
-

maybe from the screenshot, but I can assure you they do not all come from the same point.
-
Woah.
Damn.
I simply love missile spam that come out from all directions. Can't say I'm a fan of that super-puffy missile trail but this is a spoonful of some REALLY sweet stuff...
-
Video! I demands it!
-
I rather ask politely for the video ;)
-
video once it has a texture
-
I loooove double posting.
Cause nobody is going to stop me!
The video, as promised: V-i-d-e-o (http://youtu.be/ChyikdKry1c?hd=1)
Axem took one for the team
Disclaimer: No Axem's were harmed in this production. What you see in the video is his stunt double, aXem.
-
That's the kind of stuff I like.
You don't seem to be taking any performance related hits with that... those are trails and not particles correct?
-
Old Robotech missile launch sounds. I think I swooned.
-
Those trails definitely look much better in motion then they do in a static screen shot. Can't wait for WoD 2.
-
Old Robotech missile launch sounds. I think I swooned.
There is no Robetech... only Macross!
And a bunch of hypocritical assholes blocking up Macross materials from being translated and sold outside of asia

Nope, these are particles. And probably will make several pc's cry in despair :p

Find me a Macross/robotech missile launch sound and i'll use it :p
-
RIP LSF aXem.
Good vid too.
-
If you can bear to watch 7 again, Spoon...the VF-11s, VF-17s and practically every other big ship fires off a LOT OF MISSILE MISSILE SOUNDS every few episodes. :P Oh, and Max's VF-22S. If not, the missile sounds fired by the Archangel when it launches Helldarts/Sledgehammers/blahblah from SEED could be used...where to find 'em? I don't know...sadly.
But, damn. This is really really cool. Hope they have a good range, the missiles. Also, the side launchers that don't have a view of the target ship...don't seem to be firing...?
-
Find me a Macross/robotech missile launch sound and i'll use it :p
You actually have one. That's the sound they used for missile launch in Battlecry.
-
Little did I know!
-
It lives!
Better than my computer hard drives that fried, but ima sorta happy you've got it in-game now.
-
Those missiles are pretty scary in motion! Fuuuuu-
