Title: Controller idiocy (split from Transcend)

Because joysticks belong to the past dude. We invented mice since then.

QFT.

And Joystick is better than keyboard.

Keyboard people go: "Look, I managed to master an extremely inefficient and user unfriendly FS2O control into an efficient one, even if there is far better inventions, I don't care about improving or progress or that all modern games are using mouse+keyboard, even if people have put lots of effort in the graphic part so this game can be up to date with modern game tech; all I care is how "1337" I am on thins thing, specially on multiplayer, to make even more unpopular this great game".

tecno... just because YOU dont like the keyboard does not give you licence to go around and dis it, it is still a common control type just like the mouse, and last i checked, the best multi pilot is a keyboard user

besides, joysticks arent nearly as common as they used to be, and the cheapest good one is near $40... just go continue to use the control type your best with and leave the rest alone, dont go complaining for the sake of complaining

now on topic: trancend was a very good campaign, just wish the weps weren't stock (that herc 2 is capable of so much more)

I'd probably be more willing to give a mouse a try if I had a more conventional one.

To the joystick haters out here, I just want to raise the point that I'm pretty certain that sticks in general used to be pretty expensive, any decent one at least. The difference is that, as they're much more of a niche product today than they were in the 90's, less people have them. And because of demand, less people make them.

Adding to that, a trip to Logitech's website will show quite clearly that a good, economy stick can be bought for less than 40 USD. 3D Pro FTW.

FINALLY, play a game which was made to use a stick properly. FS's stick input code really must blow, as I can't use zero deadzone settings in the options menu, EVEN IF I'm using external software to alter how my stick works with FSO. In comparison, Tachyon has GREAT stick control, and apparently its mouse control code was way, way ahead of FS as well. Don't get me wrong, FS is a great game with a great engine, but control inputs are quite lacking.

Needless to say, I do now have a stick and use it for FSO. The problem again is that FSO will not properly register minimum deadzone settings without receiving input noise, even if you've been using the stick's own software to overcome that. Now, I could be wrong on this front, but I remember clearly enough testing this issue to no positive effect.

In any sense, for maneuvering and flight, the stick is unbeatable. The problem is holding accurate aim while accounting for FS's BS stick input control. Stick + mouse = win.

Thaeris:

I normaly play on 2nd deadzone setting if playing vs AI, because yes, minimum will pull a direction. But if your in a serious dogfight with another person, or constantly moving, you wont notice that drag since you'll be auto-correcting or are already turning anyway and that tiny extra bit can help a ton. Really the only time that deadzone pull should ever effect you is if you are sitting there doing nothing, which you shouldn't be doing anyway, right?

On the other hand, yes, 3D Pro FTW.

Actually the stick input controls are set rather nicely and have even been recently updated.

The trick is leaving the deadzone at 1 dot and the sensitivity at 1 dot shy of full and then make any adjustments in the stick controls as needed. This is considered as the "sweet" spot.

To be on topic to the campaign, I absolutely love this and Sync. They are both on my Top 5 list for FS Mods of all time.

Please inform yourself better about this before posting OK? FYI , multiplayer is balanced so keycoard, keyboard+mouse, joystick & joystick+keyboard have the same skill rate, so the scale of effectiveness goes something like this: keyboard<joystick+mouse<mouse+keyboard, hence joystick+mouse have to be effectiveness nerfed in FS, get it?

No, you are not getting it. All the control mechanisms supported by FS2 are balanced against each other in such a way that the deciding factor in matches is pilot skill, not the control mechanism used.

and your spouting random crap again tecno. all becasue you don't like and cant use certain control types they must be unbalanced somehow.

do you really think, knowing all the work that goes into FSO, that they wouldn't balance control types? i personaly prefer joystick, good for me. QD prefers keyboard, good for him. other players even prefer gamepads, and ya know? they dont do half bad either, some of them are very good.

stop complaining and putting down all the control types and preaching so called "facts" about how they suck. we've been over this on your "mouse as joystick" thread already. find a control type you like and leave the others alone.

Next time you guys want to carry on a stupid personal argument, do it in a place that isn't a campaign release thread.
