So in my spare time I've started playing Warzone 2100, an old game that I fondly remember from the a long time back. The good news is it's free and open sourced so you can play it on Linux, Windows and Mac and since its graphic requirement are pretty low you can actually play it on a netbook.
The only problem is the game is pretty long winded; there are over something like 400 tech branches to research and it includes everything from flamethrowers, mortars, and even mobile howitzers.
Kiss several hours goodbye.
My play style is a teching turtle, I like to build walls and lob death with rockets and mortars, then build walled mazes and put my poor oponent under siege and sit back while columns of unshielded tanks and hovercraft are unmercifully pecked to death by constant shelling, rocket fire, and then even subjecting the battered survivors to another round of up-close missile love. Then, to kick an already burnt dead horse, I also add incidenary death via burning mortars and howitzers.
However, turtling doesn't protect against satelite bombardment.

Warzone 2100 is an old favourite of several members of this Forum, it's achieved 'permanently installed' status on my computer, and I still love playing it from time to time, partly because of the depth of the tech tree, to the point where you can install anti-artillery rader that will plot the course of incoming artillery barrages and return fire to the point of origin, never seen a game so dedicated to the art of technological warfare. In many ways, once it gets to the point of the Global Uplink, it kind of ruins the fun.
Turtling can work for a while, and the AI doesn't build very good bases, often trapping large chunks of their own units behind buildings, which can be irritating, but all in all, I still consider it one of the all time greats when it comes to RTS games.

I hope you guys are happy, you've gone and re-addicted me to this game. Working my way through the campaign again, atm.

Heh, finished the game a few weeks ago, I always like Warzone2100 because it had such a huge wealth of weapons to chose from, other RTS games dont have even half of them but nothing beats crushing the enemy with a immense salvo of ripple rocket artillery from 20 tanks. :D

Is there a way to get repair units to repair any and all units in range? So far it looks like I need to click on every damaged unit to get the repair teams to do anything
-
They should do that automatically if they are sitting near a damaged unit, they should drive up to it and start repairs. The only risk is a tight-packed group, where they cannot move toward their target.
-
Depends on your approach with repair units - though fragile, I specifically keep my repair units on hovercraft because it's a lot easier then watching watching them spin in circles - just keep them away from one shot attacks like lancers or bunker busters.
And I'm lovin' my cyborg grenadiers, they've proven much more effective than a mortar defense routine, and have turned into a nasty punch in the balls. I wrecked an enemy base full of howtizers with a shock attack of grenadiers (no charge of the light brigade necessary).

I've never heard of this one. Looking at their home page, it almost looked to be Spring RTS, though that seems to not be the case.
In any sense, here's the homepage:

I remember this game. I played the PSX version and, to be honest, I didn't know there was a PC version of it. It must be easier to handle than its console counterpart.
