Title: In another WTF moment
Post by: Kosh on May 31, 2011, 10:25:45 pm
WTF (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13608444)

Quote
The World Health Organization's cancer research agency says mobile phones are "possibly carcinogenic".

A review of evidence suggests an increased risk of a malignant type of brain cancer cannot be ruled out.

However, any link is not certain - they concluded that it was "not clearly established that it does cause cancer in humans".

A cancer charity said the evidence was too weak to draw strong conclusions from.

A group of 31 experts has been meeting in Lyon, France, to review human evidence coming from epidemiological studies.

They said they looked at all relevant human studies of people using mobile phones and exposure to electromagnetic fields in their workplace.

The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) can give mobile phones one of five scientific labels: carcinogenic, probably carcinogenic, possibly carcinogenic, not classifiable or not carcinogenic.

It concluded that mobiles should be rated as "possibly carcinogenic" because of a possible link with a type of brain cancer - glioma.

So let me get this straight, mobiles have been in common use for 10 years now and to date there has never been a demonstrated link between cell phone radiation and cancer. Not only that but because they have been in common use for so long why haven't we seen an epidemic of cancer?

And I'm not even sure how this is even possible in the first place, cell phone radiation isn't ionizing.

Basically they don't want to be wrong so they've put it in the possibly carcinogenic rather than inventing a 6th "Probably not carcinogenic" category.

Don't you just love bureaucracy.

Cancer itself is becoming epidemic.  In fact, one could go so far as to say that it's simply part of the human condition.  If you live long enough, you WILL get cancer.

There are so many hereditary and environmental factors that go into what causes it to occur earlier or later, and what kind it'll be, and how resilient your body is to it, it's incredible.

In California, at least, McDonalds is now required to post that if your fries brown a little, they may increase your cancer risk.

I thought this **** had been put to rest. Why can't they just sum it all up as "living greatly increases your risk for cancer?"

Or, like, "Living condition is the major cause of Death"?
