Title: Planets and asteroid adventures (split from A celebration of Freespace)
Post by: Commander Zane on June 10, 2011, 09:57:30 am
Huh, I wonder what they originally planned on doing with planets that it would have that.
Plus, how is it showing up at all?

Just name something 'planet' in FRED, fly near it in game

That's it? No SEXP or anything?

I will now distract you all with pics of mediocre thrusters.

*img*

It will look better with some sparse thruster particles trailing behind it. Also **** the cursor

*img*

Also I forgot to remove the alpha channel lol
And I forgot to say, sans the lack of Alpha Channel, the thruster effect looks pretty good, is it going to have a new flame effect too?

Marcov, what the **** did you do the interior of that asteroid.
It looks royally ****ed.

It can be found here (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Asteroid_Installation), which I believe, is by Trashman.

Then I made it bigger using Spicious' PCS2.

Wasn't this used in Procyon Insurgency? I somehow remember a large asteroid base with a Shivan cruiser beside it.

I know what that asteroid model is. I'm using it in a mod.

I'm asking what you did to it to it. It looks totally glitched. See this (http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd362/Santosficationab/insideplanet1.jpg) image? What the **** is with all the missing walls? Looks like you either raped about half of the interior building faces with your upscale attempt, or your missing some textures.

Hmm...it did look a bit weird from the start.

I'll try to re-download and see if it does anything.

EDIT: Indeed. In the .pof file it looks perfectly fine; however, in FRED and ingame, the platforms are gone!  :wtf:

Anyone care to explain this, and how to fix it?

Methinks you're missing a texture then. Check your paths.
PCS2 might be reading textures from someplace your mod isn't.

Missing texture? The download only comes with the .tbl file and a model file.

The model could have textures intended for a mod.

Whatever you're talking about, no textures are found in the freespacemods.net download!

Did it ever occur to you that it may not have been packaged with the model?
Maybe whoever packed it assumed that whoever's using it wouldn't be a N00B and would know how to check texture lists in PCS2 so they didn't mention it.
Maybe whoever packed it assumed that people using it would know how to go check that texture list and replace missing textures?
But maybe, that's too much to ask of n00bs. They all have intelligence equivalent to dust mites, right?

Droid, don't be a dickhead. Who can be arsed to check the texture lists? Give him a break, it's not like he's messing around with some of your stuff.

Yeah, you and me must be n00bs!

And of all the thousand people who might download the Asteroid Base, only 1 would have the brains of The_E, who is at least smarter than a dust mite!

Again I create problems. I uploaded that, I think I took it from Snail, as it was lost in the space-time continuum. I didn't receive any textures with it, it seemed to work with retail. I didn't check the inside altough!

Awright, break it up, you two. And when in "A celebration of FreeSpace": moar pics, less talking.

Hear ye! The Vader has spoken!

So where are the textures?
Title: Re: Planets and asteroid adventures (split from A celebration of Freespace)
Post by: Droid803 on June 11, 2011, 01:01:35 pm
Tell me the texture name.
Or just change it to a retail texture, like I did, because it takes like two seconds, and a brain-dead monkey could do it.

Open the POF in PCS2, go to the thing on the left hand panel that says TEXTURES. Expand the list. There's the texture list! Wasn't so hard, was it?

Just click on the texture name that causes pink lines to appear over the white stuff (on the inside, signifying missing textures), go to the right hand side panel, and type in a different texture name, like TCOV1 or something else that's present in retail (hell, you could even check the rest of the list for textures that do work). Then hit reload textures to admire you handiwork, then save the POF. OH GOD, HOW DIFFICULT.

He's right though, there's no need to behave like such a prick.

There's definitely a need. People should know how to do this trivial stuff so that we can discuss the real problems.
No one ever taught me and I figured it all out in like ten seconds flat. I hold everyone else up to that expectation.

I don't have any brain dead monkeys close at hand at the moment. Could you lend me yours?

That's basically asking for the impossible then.

A lot of people are impaitent and don't try learning for themselves before they complain about something not being right.

TBH, that station was designed to be used with FOW: COTS anyway.
I don't know why it was released without some textures, but it could have been done on request from somebody who knew how to mod.

I hold everyone else up to that expectation.

Then I should just as un-realistically hold everyone else to the same expectations that I hold myself to.

And if it were true, we wouldn't have General Discussion or Technical Support topics or having the Monkey system or having to Ban anybody except spam bots.

And there you go. Now stop whining about "but why?" like a spoiled child and play nice with the manners every body needs to employ for the sake of civility please.

Evidently not everyone is as interested or adept in the technical side of the game as you.  It is absurd to expect everyone to have the same abilities as you in every area.

Well my train of thought is that if you were intending to mod, you should be as interested in the technical side of the game...otherwise you're throwing stuff together and randomly hoping it works.

Sorry for being a prick, was in a rather foul mood :P

IIRC, I never released it as a separate download. It is possible there whoever pacekd it missed a texture. I DO have 1-2 textures that look like valinna ones, but with a different name and a tweak or two, which I sometimes use, so I see how someone might miss it.

Still, no big deal and easy to fix. So what's all the fuss about?
