i found my descent freespace game and decided to reinstall it and theres some weird stuff going on. the in game menus are all rainbowie and the in-game space is all rainbowie too. i used the compatibility mode for windows 98 and marked run in 256 colors, run in 640 x 480 screen resolution and disabled visual themes and that fixed it for a while but after the next cutscene played it screwed up again. im trying to run it on windows 7 64-bit system.
i cant find any info anywhere, i'm stumped :(

I can't say for sure that there are people here, who can play FS1 on new setups with Win7. If there are, I hope they stumble upon this thread. But, there is an alternative.
If you have FreeSpace 2, you can install FSPort (and preferrably also the FSO engine), and play the FS1 campaign that way.
If you don't have FS2, you can buy it from Good Old Games for $5.99, and then install FSPort and FSO and play the FS1 campaign. FS2 and especially FSO work considerably better on newer hardware and operating systems.

Agreed, FreeSpace Open will fix these problems.

The problem I have with Descent: FreeSpace is you see through the hulls of ships Cruiser-size and above, other than that it runs fine but it's enough of a visual distraction that I can't go through playing Retail FS1 for the sake of playing Retail.

I know that the GOG.com version of FS1 is working just fine on Win 7 here... not sure what they changed though...
