Hi! New to Freespace2, can't wait to play through this campaign I've read so much about :)
However, I was hoping to make my experience all that much better by adding high def graphics and most of all cockpit views. The only thing I didn't like when watching videos is that there was no cockpit. I did see however, that there are cockpit mods. I just can't quite seem to find out how to get these mods. I see a lot of modding tools threads but not the actual ones play with. Help is greatly appreciated! :D

Cockpit mods are not that well developed. To get the high def graphics, though, use the FreeSpace Open Installer on the top bar - make sure to select The Works or the download will fail (the installer is dumb right now.)
Once you're done with the install, use the launcher to select mediavps_3612 as your mod.

Hmm.... This is the one I had my eyes on

I am looking forward to getting the BtRL as I loooove battlestar galactica.
But I'll go ahead and get the open installer :D

Beyond the Red Line is dead. Fortunately you've got something much better in the form of Diaspora.
-
It's dead indeed, but you still can get the demo, I don't remember where exactly now but I played it a couple of months ago.. just for that nostalgia thingy.
-
I would focus on just getting FS Open installed and playing some of the campaigns. Later down the road, if you wanted to delve into setting up cockpit views, this post should have all the info you need. Like Battuta said though, it's not well developed yet. It can be tedious to set up for every ship in the game.

Diaspora will be fully cockpitted. Except for the cylons. And we might one day cockpit those when it would make sense.

I went ahead and installed freespace open. But definately can't wait to play Diaspora. Looks faaaaantastic!

Will there be a version for those of us who don't like cockpits?

Take glass texture -> make it opaque -> problem solved.
-
Aah getting all sorts of errors with freespace open. Trying to reinstall to local C:/games/Freespace 2 now.

We can solve errors very quickly if you post a debug log.

I'm assuming Hades means setting the viewpoint in a fully-modeled cockpit, not the existence of little cockpit models in other ships. Your solution wouldn't work too well in the first case. :p
-
Holy crap. Apparently it is working now cause it has been downloading and extracting for a long time and the game is already up to 7+ gigabytes

Probably not.

BtRL may be dead, but the demo was freakin sweet!

'cept for the fact that you can't hit Cylon Raiders with the Viper Mk.VII with the tri-gun mounts because Cylon Raiders are super-thin from the front and the Viper Mk.VII gun mounts are on the edges of the wings and the top of it's rudder in a triangle configuration |:

When trying to apply the graphic enhancements via the launcher, the only thing listed is "D3D 32bit mode"
I'm following the instructions thoroughly but still can't seem to get it to list anything but that under "graphics" in the features tab.
-
You need to click on the "Browse" button and select an fs2_open build. In addition, you need to go to the "Mod" tab and select the mediavps as your active mod.
-
You'll need to use "Launcher.exe". Not "Freespace2.exe" and not "FS2.exe". Edit: err, never mind me, just mumbling to myself.
-
I did all that. Still nothin. Ah frustrating indeed. In fact now nothing is showing up.
Oooh I got it now! I didn't have openal installed. My bad :)
