Title: Trouble with ST:R.
Post by: MrTealTwo on June 28, 2011, 11:05:10 pm
Little problem here. I set up Silent Threat: Reborn. FSPort 3.3, MediaVPs 3.6.12. When I run FSO, create a new pilot, select the campaign and run it, well  :eek2:, the first mission doesn't load. No errors, nothing. The loading screen has one blob on the left, glowing, and the rest empty. It does not progress anywhere, so I have to kill the program. FSPort works fine, as soon as I change the name of the FSPort-folder to "fsport3_3", since that's what "fsport-mediavps" is looking for. However, I noticed that "fsport-str" is looking for just "fsport". Interesting. Whatever the problem is, it doesn't get solved by changing the folder name. I eyeballed this board and found no answer.

If anyone knows a solution, please inform me. If additional information is required, ask, and I'll do my best to provide it  ;) For now, I'll just concentrate on other content  :p

Your folder should be named 'FSPort'. The mod.ini in fsport-mediavps should look for 'fsport'.

Please post a debug log (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.msg1180359#msg1180359) so I can help you. It sounds to me like your game is just trying to generate cache files.

You probably need to let it load for a while, if it's generating cache files. I have a fairly powerful computer myself and it took me a handful of minutes to generate all the cache files for every ship.

Also, make sure you have a recent nightly build. FSPort MVPs 3.3 are not compatible with FSO 3.6.12.

And like Mjn said, please provide a log.

The Nightly Build was the key, I got the latest one, and everything loads quickly and perfectly now. I actually tried loading the first mission again, before getting the new build, and it did, I left it loading and came back after many minutes, and the Command Briefing was there.

I played Shrouding the Light, Phantoms and Echo Gate with my "faulty configuration", and they worked fine. But there were some small issues. Like the fact that the game didn't use the ultra-cool Aten-model :D, had a more simple one instead. Other ship models were mostly fine, I think. Some warning messages. Didn't affect the gameplay, so I ignored these issues. No more of that, huh.

What still puzzles me to no end, is the name of the fsport-folder. If I name it "fsport3_3", and make "fsport-mediavps" and "fsport-str" look for it, everything functions correctly. However, if I name it "fsport" and do the mod.ini changes, it DOESN'T WORK properly. When starting up FSO, I get an error message, something like: "32 ship classes missing" or something similar. I would like to know the reason for this odd inconsistency.

Another very weird thingie. I followed the steps you provided, tried to make an error log. Guess what  No error log. I changed to a debug build, ran the game in a window and entered the ST:R's first loading screen. I killed the game after a few seconds. No error log in freespace2/data. Just a bunch of folders and three .cfg-files. I guess the reason might be, that the game didn't crash, and I didn't exit. So no errorlog. Just another ? for me, though. I don't know much about these things.

What I know is that I'm gonna absolutely enjoy Silent Threat: Reborn. Hehe. Cool :) I have a FreeSpace project of my own in the works. I'll release it, someday, I promise. Thx A LOT for the help, people. And by all means, explain the two ? I have. I might learn something. Might be useful ;)

That is not true. FSPort should run just fine with 3.6.12 builds. However, it will need to build cache files because 3.6.12 uses the old cache system.

MrTealTwo: If you followed those instructions to the letter, then a log was generated. It doesn't matter how far you get, as soon as the EXE is run, a log will be generated. I really can't help any further without a log.

Hmm, I guess I made a mistake somewhere earlier, I changed the folder name and mod.inis to "fsport" again, works just fine this time around. Hmmph.

And you were right, of course, mjn.mixael, it was about following the instructions to the letter. The log is attached, if you want to take a look, although there are no real problems to solve any more. The new build quickened the loading, and the messing around with the folders and mod.inis was (apparently) my fault, or some insane prank by my computer.

The only question I have left, although it has nothing to do with Silent Threat: R is that why do Shrouding the Light and Shivans use a lower-than-best-quality Aten-model? That's all, really. Appreciate the help.

That is odd. According to your log, you should be loading the new Aten. Mind grabbing a screenshot of the model in question?

EDIT: I just realized you are talking about other user-made campaigns. The only campaigns really support by the FSPort staff are..

FS1
Operation Templar
ST:R
ST

The others are user made campaigns that should work with FSPort.

Now, with that said.. here's what I think. Most of those campaigns are older and some not really maintained anymore. It is quite likely that both Shrouding the Light and Shivans use a specialized Aten model for one reason or another. Due to their age, it is likely that the model they used is the retail model. Since they aren't maintained, they never got upgraded models.

ST:R itself was like this with the Faustus and Orions until this release. Unfortunately, unless someone wants to dig through the modpacks for those campaigns, they'll continue to look a bit dated.

Neither STL or BRShivans use a specialized ATEN.  My guess would be that the Mod.ini is referring to the wrong media VP folder.

Do those mods come with their own mod.ini? It's likely that they are looking to an older mediavps. Edit at your own risk.

Most likely the mod.inis of older FSPort campaigns point to \mediavps\ instead of \mediavps_3612\ and do not even point to \fsport-mediavps\ at all. They can, of course, be edited to fix this, but the campaigns themselves can't be guaranteed to work with newer stuff.

You can try, of course. Nothing will break from trying.

Thanks for all your great answers. I got EVERYTHING working :) I just copied the multimod part of the "fsport-str" mod.ini, in its correctly functioning form, into the mod.inis of the other FSport campaigns. Multimod Primarylist fsport-mediavps Secondarylist fsport,mediavps_3612. Gonna do this to all other FSport campaigns. All the models work correctly now. Shrouding the Light and Shivans use the high-quality aten-model + others (for example, the Valkyrie, which was somewhat ugly, when I played through these). Mjn.mixael: the aten-model was correct in the errorlog because I made it using ST:R, since my original problem WAS the loading screen, after all. Didn't completely think that one through, either. At least I know how to make the errorlog now, in case more problems arise.

I worked my way through all of ST:R, it was Super. Prefer it over the original volition FS1 and FS2 main campaigns now. I must say I was really blown away by the speed at which u all answered. Been around, playing the games, more or less, ever since FS1 came out. Beautiful to see that the community is so active. That's all I have to say ;)

I'll be back :p

Pretty much all of the old campaigns will work with the new stuff.  The advantage to most of the FSPort campaigns is that they don't have a lot of additional items that have to be fixed every time the "stuff" changes.
