I'm curious as to what some of you are using as the renderer when you do your RTT in Max.
Example: mental ray gi.no.hi, Gen Render, daylighting, etc...
What benefit does one have over the other for you in texturing for FSO?

I think that drop down just alters settings on the render settings pop up, which I've already got set up. I usually leave it blank.

No he's specifically speaking of different renderers.
I don't usually render many things in max, and when I do, it's only to test stuff, so I'm fine with the standard one.

I just use LightTracer with a Skylight. Default settings.
Works well enough for AOs, ends up leaving some edges though...so if you aren't going for cel-shading style its not so ideal.
But I am, so I'm liek ****EYAR.

I also use light tracer but I usually prefer to keep the skylight at a 0.5 multiplier and have a key light with some semi transparent shadows. It keeps highlights and shows normal maps really well as well as making objects look awesome. But again I keep the presets blank as they tend to be wacky for me. I also enable super sampling to do away with texture stretching better at extreme angles. It also really helps with small objects and when you juuuuuuust need to squeeze more definition out of an object.

I've been making sort of a array of low power lights around the model then using mental ray daylighting.
Seems to do a better job of highlighting areas and doesn't leave me with such a dull texture.

Some old mental ray renderings:
