Title: Google+
Post by: Bobboau on July 11, 2011, 08:22:26 pm
how many people here have heard of this? it's google's attempt to kill facebook twitter and skype in one swift and heavy blow, an actually competent service for once, as opposed to the last few abortive attempts at social networking that google have made.
I'm totally sold on it, BTW.
and if anyone wants invites I can make it happen.

i dont like social networking at all. im good with computers mainly because i hate people so much. then you turn around and create something like facebook (same can be said for gui based oses) and screw it all up. further more back in the 90s when social networking was non-existent, and people who wanted to be on the internet had to learn actual html and find some hosting (there were a lot of free hosts out there at the time). now its sad that you can accomplish the same thing by signing up to a social networking site with no actual geekiness involved. it should be illegal for non-geeks to use computers. it makes me so pissed off that i could club a cute baby seal with another cute baby seal.

I just started using Facebook a month ago and that's hard enough to get the hang of...

social networking can go to hell.  i regret making a facebook account all those years ago.  how naive of me to think it would remain a non-intrusive, easy way to maintain contacts with school friends that i actually know.  but no, where there's money to be had, people will be data mined, have their info sold, and ad spammed.

Please play EaW with mods... o_o Vanilla is sooo disappointing once you've tried any big mods.

Anyway, I mostly agree with you. Social networking sites like Facebook can be very boring unless there's someone I actually know that's online.

I technically have an account thanks to my brother's invite, but I haven't done anything with it other than briefly look it over.  The "circles" thing is an interesting concept, though it seems like it'll take some getting used to.

Vanilla is disappointing without mods, but not as much as social networking.

Not exactly the smartest move to post email addresses as-is in public forums. I can only assume you've been already been datamined and added to even more spamlists than you were already.

As for Google+, it's in limited early public beta test where you apparently need to have public profiles or your profile will get deleted. Not really interested at this time. Let's see again when it's actually ready for use. I hardly ever use Facebook, so I dunno what G+ has to offer. And why is it called Google+, the name doesn't roll off the tongue that well.

I'll pass, personally. I'm not a huge fan of Facebook as-is and I don't need another service. Besides, Google already has access to all my emails and search habits, I don't really think they need everything else too.

I'll sit out the rush on this one.

Public profiles are no problem at the moment; nothing important is on G+. Right now it's just building a userbase. I really hope that the rivalry kills social networking. But it's unlikely. :(

Post by: Unknown Target on July 12, 2011, 09:15:12 am
Why would you want to kill social networking? This forum could be considered "social networking".
I think what you want is to kill the corporitazation and subsequent profitization of all of our personal lives, hopes, and relationships, so that what is essentially a zombie society can continue to lurch forwards, unthinking and unfeeling of the destruction it wrecks upon people's lives.

I've heard that google's idea about G+ is that google employees really hate facebook corporate bull****, and wanted to make an open sourced social net. So they are first building it up in closed proprietary form to open up later.

Dunno if tru.

Retaining, using, or losing? Because Google retains pretty much everything, doesn't use anything quickly identifying, and has lost very little. Facebook, on the other hand, retains pretty much everything, uses pretty much everything, and lets the Applications platform get a copy of all the data too.

I'm pretty sure there are banks with worse track records than both Google and Facebook, and considering how much information Google has available to it, I believe it has a statistically pretty awesome track record.

I'd be interested to take a look at what the fuss is about, although I use FB more as a IM panel to people that can't be bothered
to use actual IM protocols...

Email ain't hard to figure out, it's my forum name @gmail.com.
Appreciate it...

I guess the real question is how long before a major hack attack on G+ happens, it would make for a lovely target.

Quote
Google+ To Pass 10,000,000 Users Tomorrow (on 7/12)

As I promised on Saturday night, I have finished updating my Google+ membership model with new data and re-estimated the Google+ user base.

My surname-based analysis shows that the number of Google+ users worldwide reached 7.3 million yesterday (July 10) – up from 1.7 million users on July 4th. That is a 350% increase in six days. The userbase is growing so quickly that it is challenging for me to keep up, since the number of users of any given surname (even the rare ones I am tracking) seems to be climbing every day.

More impressive than last week's growth is the astonishing growth in users from yesterday at mid-day to tonight -- a 30% jump. My latest estimate tonight shows approximately 9.5 million users. This suggests that 2.2 million people have joined Google+ in the past 32-34 hours.

I project that Google will easily pass 10 million users tomorrow and could reach 20 million user by this coming weekend if they keep the Invite Button available. As one G+ user put it, it is easy to underestimate the power of exponential growth.

I think the reporter ****ed up in what people meant by "tracking" in that news piece. I'm more inclined to believe that Zucky made some change or other, and then these "statisticians" lost track of his numbers.

Which is a completely different meaning to the term.

I mean, ffs Zuck is not dumb, he's actually very intelligent. Who even considers it a possibility that Zuck entered G+ only to remember later on that he was "trackable", as if that wasn't the point in the first place, and as if this social stuff was all a novelty to him? I mean, that's just insanely stupid.

At the moment, I don't think Google+ has any "groups" or "pages" like Facebook does. If you want to, you can create your own HLP "circle" and add your Google+ -wielding HLP contacts there. And they can do the same. Stressing that I don't know for certain, just guessing based on my own experiences.

Google has been shown lately to have behaved quite evilish, with all that crap about android and the patents they just chose to ignore and steal anyway. Google+ may run into similar problems, however I think that's not exactly the problem with G+.

The biggest problem is that Facebook isn't the new mySpace. Facebook has reached a point of no return, they have 700 million "friends", with most celebrities and politicians commited to it. Facebook won. Google+ may dent a little, but there's just something very queer and awkward to have the biggest search algorithm in the world paired with your own social network. Feels too much control on one company.

Well, let's wait and see.

It's hardly a question of hatred. It's much more about being completely and utterly ****ed up in the ass.

There's a nasty giant group of megacorporate perverts looking into android's fragile and exposed anus, waiting to serve anyone's vengeance.
