Title: Smoke and fire effects
Post by: Dragon on July 12, 2011, 08:01:31 am
Since m!m made volumetric particle trails possible, I wanted to make a missile smoke trail effect using his script.
The problem is, there are no really good particle smoke bitmaps, only BTRL particlesmoke01 looks good for that purpose, but it has too many frames and only comes in black.
Also, there are no really good thruster particles, most available animations are too long and have too many frames.
So, I'd like to request a set of particles:
White smoke
Black smoke
Gold thruster flame
Blue thruster flame
Blue-to-red thruster flame

So far, that's all I'm going to need for my experiments.
I'd like these to look "realistic". Flame particle anims should "shrink" (like particlesmoke02) and smoke should "expand". Because there will be a lot of these on screen, they shouldn't have too many frames nor very high resolution.

I'll take a look, but I can't promise anything useful. I have barely even looked into the particle script/code and don't really know it's capabilities or limitations.

Also, 'realistic' flame and smoke is quite difficult especially with limited frame counts and size. Don't get your hopes too high.

Well, it doesn't need to look very detailed, remember that there will be a lot of individual particles on screen, together creating a thruester plume and smoke trail efffects.

o rly. Is that how particles work?

I know the basics. But like I said, this is a part of the engine I have barely glanced at and don't really have set up for testing. I can't promise anything fantastic or timely.

U could try to use other games bitmaps.

For instance, Quake 3 ones. And of course, just as a placement for study. I'm not recommending copyright infringement.

Maybe . . . . . . . . . google open source / free ones?

Yeah that too. It's just that I remember playing with those textures very well, and they are well made too.

Note, I don't need static bitmaps, but a set of anims made for FS2 Open. Some smoke effects are done using static bitmaps, but then, other engines can handle particles much better than FSO.
