I am running the game ok enough with MediaVP 3.6.12 on
Athlon 64 3200+ 2200mhz
1 gig memory
GForce 6600 gt
BP AoA works fine, though I suspect WiH might be too much to ask

For basic, no mediavps use, minimal system requirements would be something like a Pentium 3, 256 MB RAM, and an OpenGL 1.2-capable GPU.
With basic mediavps, I would suggest a Pentium 4 or better, 1 GB of RAM (2 if using Win Vista/7), and a GPU capable of handling OpenGL 2.1 or better.
Advanced mediavps would need more RAM, and a GPU capable of handling OpenGL 3, with at least 512 MB of dedicated video RAM.

Thanks E
the boxs I use are right in the middle

Just for future reference I'm on an AMD E-350 Dual Core processor clocked at 1.66Ghz, 2GB RAM, and a Radeon HD 6310. It's very slow loading without .ibx caches but once it gets stuff loaded it all runs smoothly.

System Requirements:
AMD Athlon XP/64/X2, Intel P4/Core 2 Duo, or similar
Windows 98/2000/XP/Vista, Mac OS X 10.4+, or a recent Linux distro
GeForce 5xxx or Radeon 9xxx or other OpenGL-compatible video card.
An OpenAL-compatible sound card
1 GB RAM, 2 GB recommended.
A working FreeSpace 2 install
OpenAL 1.1

Hey, that's really useful information that I didn't know. Should that be posted, say, in the wiki, maybe in one of the getting started/setup pages, or even in its own "System requirements" page?
Although the information requires people to know which version of OpenGL their GPU supports... Wikipedia says my video card supports 3.3, but the information from the SCP hardware survey thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=77102) shows it only supports 2.1, thus explaining (with the lack of VRAM) why my machine struggles with MV_Advanced.vp... :blah:

Any chance that you're using a Mac? OSX doesn't support OpenGL 3.
OSX Lion is expected to though. In the meantime... bootcamp? :/

I do indeed use a Mac, although my video card still falls short on VRAM (256 MB).

I use a mac aswell as a few windows boxes
but I have some graphics trouble on the mac
I made a post in the support board
please check it out if you think you can help it's getting annoying
