Title: No v-sync screws up cutscenes
Post by: Buckshee Rounds on July 12, 2011, 12:20:41 pm
Firstly, apologies if this has been mentioned before, I've done a search and didn't find anything.

Now then: basically what the title says. If v-sync is turned off, either through the launcher or nvidia control panel, then it simply blacks out cutscenes. I can see a wee bit of the image and nothing else, oftentimes just a blank screen with sound in the background. This happens when the cutscene is fading in or out. For example: the intro cutscene in Vassago's Dirge is completely unwatchable, just blank. WiH's intro is blank at the fading parts near the start and the rest watchable.

If I turn on v-sync the problem goes away, however I'd really rather play without it as it makes the game stutter and ruins the flight dynamics.

I've tried other things, such as running different non-SSE builds, turning off post processing etc. It never works. I fear this isn't fixable. Is it worth mantising? Can anyone give me advice? Thanks.

EDIT: This is in-game cutscenes btw.

This isn't so much a bug as an unwanted feature, which is why I've not posted a log. Can aynone give me some advice please?

Well, all I personally know is that it happens. Axem has warned in the Vassago's Dirge release thread that people should not have the flag enabled or the cutscenes will not work properly.

It's worth the screwed up cutscenes though, v-sync completely ruins the game for me. :(

What I would like to know is if this issue affects only nvidia chips. Because I sure haven't seen it happening.

Also, how does vsync ruin a game completely?

I for one would very much like to see a fade in and out sexp that actually works beyond 5000milisecs and not be dependant on framerate (if I put my screen at 120hz, vsync will be at 120 fps meaning the fade in and outs do not work properly either)

I disable v-sync in the FSO launcher way back when.

But I do still have v-sync on in the nV Control Panel, because really, a fluid and constant 60 is good enough for me. This puts the synchronization more on the GPU and less on the application, or so I perceive.

Over 300 was awesome at first but it just sorta got to be "meh" after a while, especially since most of the effects EFFs (if not all of them) are geared towards viewing 60 FPS as the standard to divide into.

I'm exaggerating a bit, but with v-sync on the player ship sort of continues to move after I've yawed to the left or right, sort of like a bomber only it happens with ships like the Perseus. The movement isn't a sharp turn, it looks fluidic and sluggish. Plus the game stutters sometimes, Vassago's Dirge is a good example.

Funny you should mention nvidia. I'm running on a GTX 460 myself.

Putting on v-sync in the control panel still causes the fading problem. My refresh rate is 60Hz, would changing that with v-sync on help at all?
