I just downloaded the awakenings fs1 port from here http://fsport.hard-light.net/website/downloads.html
When i started the first mission, i had no guns, just missiles and in weapon selection, there were no guns to be selected. i thought it was supposed to be like that for the first mission. but then i downloaded cardinal spear, and the same thing but no missiles either! What am i missing?

what do you mean i just got fs open, got those two campaigns plus the voice and all that and put them in the right folder.

Did you use the installer or do everything by hand?
Both Awakenings and Cardinal Spear are FS1 campaigns and as such require FSPort (FS1 on FS2) to run, preferably with the FSPort-MediaVPs.

Core files go in a folder named fsport, FSPort MVPs go in a folder named fsport-mediavps, and if you can spare the extra data i highly recommend the hi-res command briefing anims, which go in fsport.

ohh thanks!!! ya i used an installer. i remember the guy saying he didnt put media vps in or something and where do i put the fs port folder? im completely clueless on what to do with it cuz im new to all this ive pleen playing freespace as is since 98
another question for anyone willing to answer... My computer handles the fs2 graphics perfectly with my vt radeon x1300 but the sound is choppy in menu and cant understand the briefing voice. works fine in game though (til i press f2 to go the the options menu)

If you use the installer and tell it to 'get you the works' it should download and place most it where is needs to be, but if you want to do it by hand then:
Core files should go in: Freespace2\fsport\
Port MVPS: Freespace2\fsport-mediavps\
Awakenings: Freespace2\Awakenings\
Cardinal Spear: Freespace2\Cardinal Spear\
Basicly most mods go in their own folder, and some mods call upon other mods which require the folders name to be a certain thing. An example of this would be Cardinal Spear calls upon FSPort and FSport-mediavps so the folders must be named that. For almost all mods, the thread you find them in will tell you how to install it, what goes where, and what things must be named. When in doubt, use the installer.

when i used the installer i checked to get everything. i just downloaded all ther required fs1 ports and fsport mediavp and put them where they said to put them. i used the enabler and it said it was enabled, but it didnt work. everythings the same.

try to do this
extract to fs named mod then play
or try to type primary ,named mod
