Title: Thorough directions on mediaVPs?
Post by: JaredFrost95 on July 16, 2011, 02:27:28 am
Hi i've been trying to mod freespace for better graphics but it's just been a big mess. So I deleted everything so I could start fresh. If anyone has the time and will, it would be amazing if you could give me directions for an idiot on how to use mediaVPs with links and stuff. And maybe tell me exactly what to do with this fs1 port? http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=76733.0

FSPort installs fine if you follow the instructions in that thread. Vader's link will tell you how to install mediavps, which is for FS2 only.

Just in case you didn't already know, installing a mod does not mean that the mod is being used by the game. You have to manually select it from the launcher (select the "fsport_mediavps" folder for example) to have the game engine load that mod. Loading the mediavps_3612 mod will give you pretty graphics in FS2, while loading fsport_mediavps will give you pretty graphics AND a new campaign available in tech room (which is ported from FS1). You can't load more than one mod directory at the same time, and trying to play a campaign not specific to the mod (like running FS2 campaign while FSPort is loaded as the active mod) can potentially result in errors.

Normally you can get an installer to download and place everything for you. I think it works properly, though I'm not sure how up to date it is. (Of course, mod selection is still something manual through the launcher) http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html

Don't give up, FS is well worth it.

did you get the Media VP's to work correctly?

Well, if you fix that attitude, I'm sure we'll be able to get it working for you. Like, if you posted a debug log after you concluded that it didn't work, the gurus on here will be able to pinpoint exactly why it's not working.

The debug log is generated automatically too, so it's a matter of picking the debug build and giving us the generated log file.

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=47640.0 This seems to be pretty detailed, if the installer doesn't work for you.

ur right it is. i wouldnt be the person i am today without the game. one question, is freespace open just a file that starts freespace? and i had a launcher before but none of the mods worked so i deleted everything and started fresh like i said. then i got the launcher in the link above and all it does is start freespace. the actual launcher doesnt come up.

Please note that MV_Advanced is purely optional. It's just higher resolution or higher quality works already in MV_Assets or MV_Effects, so removing that (MV_Advanced) VP from your MediaVPs dir may make them more playable.

If you've already done that, and are still having any issues, please don't hesitate to use the Support Thread about it so that we can help you.

At this point it's probably just worth it to just save up and buy a whole new computer, but back to FS:

If you're running with fsport-mediavps, you need to make a new pilot (useing any one pilot for more then one mod can result in a corrupted pilot file meaning a loss of all progress and stats, antipodes 8 fixes this but it is not yet mainstream) and go to the campaign room and select the FS1 campaign. This same logic applies to every mod/campaign. If you have a custom control scheme you want to keep, you can clone an existing pilot, but may face odds of corrupting the file (unsure about this as it hasnt happened to me... yet). A common naming style would be:

<name> FS2
<name> FS1
<name> (mod name 1)
<name> (mod name 2)
and so on
