I'm gonna need help! Here's the plan. We track the owner of volition by cellphone(easy) and find him. Then, when hes walking on the street someone drive on the sidewalk, I will push him out of the way(easy) and save his life. He will be so thrilled he will tell me if there is anything I need, just ask him. So we go to dinner like you're supposed to do when you save someone from a crazy driver. As we conversate, I'll bring up what a great game free space was and how it was a shame there wasn't a third game. "Hey here is a crazy idea, lets make a third! After all I did save your life..." GENIUS... who's in?
-
volition doesn't hold the rights for freespace. Interplay does. So no, even your brilliant and amazing idea won't do it.
-
DAM well no biggie we just convert to interplay.
-
it wouldnt' be a profitable game. And please let go of the subject. I have no problems with it, but many people here might flame you just for bringing it up.
-
Interplay's a public company, there's no one owner. Plus, they're in the toilet, hey couldn;t make FS3 if they wanted to. Plus Volition are kind of owned by THQ, so they can't work with Interplay even though they do want to make FS3.
Honestly, there's plenty of people still at Volition who've said many times that they'd love to make a new Freespace game. The motivation exists, it's just not financially viable, or contractually practical. Sad but true. :(
[EDIT]Nobody's going to flame an overenthusiastic newbie. Those days are years over.

Seconded.
Not to mention that Interplay has stooped as low as filing lawsuits against development companies that they sold their IP's to in a vain attempt to pay of debts. They are currently in court with Bethesda over a lawsuit where they failed to uphold a contract and are challenging it, attempting to get the IP to Fallout back. How the mighty have fallen.

Why should we assume it's not a regular trolling? Several have expressed desires that the forum head in that direction.
-
I meant the whole thing where people got hammered for the mere mention of FS3.
-
Come back once you gethered a few million $$$ as investment capitol. Then you can make FS3.
Money is power. If you have enough money, you can make things happen.

In the future, this ought to be the first post in all FreeSpace 3 threads.

Didn't realize DS was back.

Doesn't Volition have the rights again? Or am I thinking of Relic and Homeworld...
Wouldn't mind a Homeworld 3. FS3 on the other hand, I'd be worried about. FS2 was pretty arcadey for its time, yet it's still hopelessly beyond the target console market...
-
Because it doesn't belong in console.

Looking at Relics past/recent projects my money is on Battlefleet Gothic - Homeworld style - ... ahhh one can dream ;)

well Egosoft has been living of the X series only... why Volition cant make a FS3, or something with another name of the same style?... I think it the publisher the problem :P
and someone knows what is this "Secret Proyect Y" on Volition page?, it has been there for months.
Also, Sword of the Stars 2 is coming out in september... space games arent dead at all.
-
FS2 was the best space sim ever built, and it flopped in sales pretty badly. That's the reason you don't see space sims anymore.
FS2 was also more like a story telling game, and for that kind of game we have RPGs and action games which are way more personal and atmospheric. FS2Open is still amazingly cool, because as a story-telling game, it is quite an easy one to mod, and the results are still pretty good.

Volition can't make another FS game because they no longer own the Intellectual Property behind the story
-
sure, but still they can make a game called frexxpace the third :P
i know that Freespace story cant be used anymore, but nothing hold them of making a completely new game... at this point is a good thing.

The problem with IP and laws that protect creative content is that "similar" works can be treated the same as works directly based on, and Interplay is desperate for money so would probably try the legal route, the fine and royalties would help them greatly to survive a few more years.

Unless it's considered a parody, in which case its legally protected.
-
That's not always assured, J.K.Rowling succesfully sued several parodies of Harry Potter under plagiarism laws. It'd be a roll of the dice at best, though it might be easier in the US than the UK.
-
Just because a company has made a space sim in the past it doest mean it cant make a new one...

That is about one of the most hilarious threads I have ever come across in the Internet.
-
Better idea:
What if Bungie buys the rights to FreeSpace from Interplay, since the latter is in dire need of money, and then announces FreeSpace 3? Everyone at :v-old: will quit their jobs and go work for Bungie. Consequently the game will practically be made by :v-old:.
The game will sell because:
1. Halo nerds will buy anything with Bungie on it.
2. FreeSpace fans will buy anything with FreeSpace on it.
Problem solved.
-
Personally I'd rather see a FreeSpace 4 game. :P
-
But again, there is any info on the "Secret Project Y"? it appeared on the website shortly after the "We'd Kill To Make FreeSpace 3"...
-
How often does it need to be repeated......
Volition is NOT working on FS3 at present, unless THQ bought the license without telling anyone.
-

That's going back years. One time people where quietly optomistic, then get bored of new buys asking the inevitable question and would get pissed off, now no one really cares either way.
-
Why it has to be FS3? they cant make a new space game that has nothing to do with FS?
-
Well, considering the popularity of space games today.
-

Maybe they just like messing with our brains
-
Maybe they, just like any other AA or AAA developer out there, have a number of projects they're working on concurrently while not being able to tell anyone about the specifics.

So you're telling me Secret Project Y is a project they're working on that they can't tell anyone about? :p
-
Why don't we give derek a call while we're at it for a possibility too?
