Title: Which campaigns for starters?
Post by: Gankenstein on July 23, 2011, 03:25:12 pm
Hi all, nice to see an active community keeping Freespace alive and intersting.

Being a FS/FSO newbie, I have the full Turey's download (linux & mac files excepted), and started at the beginning with the FS1 campaign The Great War). Which campaigns should I play next in order to progress nicely through the FS/FSO universe?

I've been thinking to do Silent Threat: Reborn next, but the FS1 port (fsport-mediavps folder) also has the "Operation Templar" campaign, where does that one fit in?

After those, ought I to play the FS2 campaign? And after that, then what?

1.FS1
2.Silent Threat Reborn
3.FS2

Then you know enough to play every other campaign. If you want something like a "continuity", play Derelict (full of fun and win and not too difficult with a really nice plot) or Blue Planet (full of win, has a nice plot too). Due to the fact that Turey provides you with a lot of campaigns, you will have a lot of fun.

That was fast. Thanks a bunch. I'll go kill some Shivans now.

I would also add Uncharted Territory to your list of campaigns to play.  Its a mini campaign that takes place during the Capella Era.

Wings of Dawn (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=199.0). It's a total conversion, so it doesn't exactly take place in the FS universe, but it's really good and great fun. Unless you have some issues with anime.

Warzone is included in Turey's installer, right? If not, it's a good campaign which is not too difficult.
Another really good campaign is Into the Halls of Valhalla.  But could be a bit difficult.
If you want a ridiculous campaign, play Ridiculous (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=72554.0).
If you wanna laugh, THEN GRAB JUST ANOTHER DAY (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71634.0) ASAP.

If you want campaigns with a really tensifying plot, you should take a look at Transcend (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=34098.0).

Your recommendations are appreciated. And I don't mind if stuff is not in Turey's installer, that just seemed the good way of setting stuff up. Oh, don't mind conversions or anime either, as long as it's fun to play.

It's going to take me some time to work through all this - yay!

I'll add to that list The Procyon Insurgency. Should be downloaded already under the name PI by Turey's installer. It's a little difficult, but the writing is top notch.

I wouldn't recommend PI to a newcomer, at least if he doesn't like to play on Very Easy.  :)
It's extremaly difficult at some points, especially if you're going for bonus goals.
But you're right about the writing, a if you're good enough to handle the difficulty, I strongly recommend it.

If you're not going for every single bonus point, it's not overly hard on Easy.  If you are...well, just ask my blood pressure. :p

Play Vassago's dirge immediately after FS2 for an interesting look at the end of the game.

More campaign recommendations, yay! Keep'em coming, I think I'll be playing this game for quite a while.

After playing the FS1 Port on Easy I started Silent Threat: Reborn on Medium but needed to go back to Easy for the last three missions I played (the last I've done is Hellfire). I *have* played some missions several times before I was happy with my results (and never, mind my blood pressure, the meds I take keep it just as it's supposed to be).

It's going to take me a while to learn all the controls and what can be done with them. And will I ever learn to focus on staying alive first, killing enemies second?

Nope - I've been playing over a decade and I still can't resist that juicy cruiser kill. :D

Amen!

I know I'm guilty of the "fly directly into wing of dragons" syndrome.

If you have a powerful-enough graphics card (and after playing Blue Planet) you could also play Freespace "3" The Search for Bosh.

Yep -- my skillset as a pilot is limited to headlong guns-blazing charges supplemented by treb spam.

This is why I fly the Ares whenever I have the option.

NVidia GeForce 7600GT.

Edit: Oh, and my eyes keep reading it as "The Search for Bush"  :banghead:
