Title: Post your strange dreams
Post by: Kopachris on July 27, 2011, 01:17:49 am
Dunno if a similar topic has already been made; search didn't show it up.

Anyway, I had one of the strangest dreams I've ever had last night, accompanied by one (maybe two) false awakenings.  It started out that I was viewing a slideshow of gruesome paintings of people cut open showing organs, but no muscles or skeletons.  Just skin and organs, but the bodies were still shaped like they were supported by bones and musculature.  Still alive and, were they not paintings, moving.  Sort of "Happy Tree Friends" meets Hieronymous Bosch's "Tree-Man" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_of_Earthly_Delights#Right_panel).  The only slide that I remember much detail of now was of the upper half of a man giving cunnilingus to the lower half of a woman.  The woman's nude upper half was in ecstasies, laying next to her lower half on the bed.  Organs visible protruding from both torsos.  Shocked, I woke up.  After thinking about this strange dream for a while, I concluded that it was caused by this Star Trek mood lamp next to my bed.  After sharing my revelation, I realized that I don't have a Star Trek mood lamp, and that they probably didn't even exist.  I woke up again.  This may have been a real awakening or a false awakening; if it was real, I never became fully aware and simply laid in bed with my eyes still closed, pondering curiously about those strange dreams before going back to sleep.  The next thing I remember, I was awoken for certain by a sports car's loud engine (specifically, a 2001 Pontiac Firebird Formula's 5.7L LS1 V8) next to my window.

Well?  Anyone else care to share some strange dreams?

Strange dream threads are always fun. :pimp:  I think these (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=53623.msg1421119;topicseen#msg1421119) two (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=53623.msg1471010;topicseen#msg1471010) were my strangest thus far.

On another note, (not really one of being in a strange dream story, but as far as crazy sleep-related experiences go) I once managed to remain conscious during the entire process of actually falling asleep.  It's something we all go through, but (almost) never remember at all.  Probably this is a good thing, because it's really ****ed up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia#Sensory_phenomena).  In my experience, basically, it was like the sensation of being paralyzed by an electric current, the buzzing effect growing stronger and stronger while a dull hissing sound intensifies into a soul-searing roar as your body and world are torn apart at the atomic level, finally seamlessly replaced with a hallucinatory realm of seemingly infinite size and complexity, and of which you are in complete control.

****ing awesome, but the getting there part was... well... freaky.  To say the least.

I typically get the Tetris effect and some random sounds during hypnogogia.  What you described is actually the process of entering a lucid dream.  The sensation you describe is kind of odd (most people experience falling, and then wake themselves up), but from the article, looks like it's explained by REM atonia setting in too soon.

I don't think I've ever been conscious of the process of actually falling asleep.  I usually toss and turn for a while, even if I'm really tired, and the next thing I know...boom, I'm awake the next morning (and/or afternoon).  Those descriptions sound really freaky.

Well, I remember once, I was in some sort of an enclosed shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and something tells me that if I pray, a miracle would happen. Well, I did, and what happened was I teleported to the outside of it, on midair, and collapsed painfully to the ground. Somehow I pray again, then the same thing happens but inside the shrine; I appear in midair, and fall down painfully.

One of the freakiest dreams I had, however, was when I was 6 or 7. Not sure if I already said this, but I was in the bed, lying, with my mother beside me, on my right. I was at the center. She kept warning me no to go on my left, which had a pillow. Then all of a sudden, a low demonic, monstrous voice screamed "hala" 3 times ("hala" in Filipino means something like "oh noes!"), accompanied by 3 flashes of...something. Well, I can only remember 2 of these images; one was the picture of a Red Baron 3D (a WWI dogfight simulator) aircraft upside down, very near the ground; if it were in motion, the pilot's head would hit the ground and the player would die instantly. The last image, was frightening, to say the least; some sort of zombie, slimy, with a white head and an indescribable face, lying on...something, not sure what it is, but I had the idea that it was the one that kept uttering the thing; the one that haunted my dream.

I sometimes get paranoid about being conscious during hypnagogia (I don't really want to be there when I fall into unconsciousness; the similarities to the voidness of death are a little too close) which can cause insomnia. Highly irrational, yet there it is.

REM kicking in too early makes sense -- I can still distinctly recall the sensation of my eyes twitching back and forth in my head as the craziness started -- yet my vision wasn't following the movements.  Strange juxtaposition of senses, that was.

As for why my experience getting into the dream was so intense, I honestly have no idea.  I blame DMT.  :shaking:

No, no, no.  Not REM sleep kicking in too early, but REM atonia (sleep paralysis) kicking in early.  REM atonia usually kicks in only once you're actually asleep, to prevent you from acting out your dreams and possibly hurting yourself.  If sleep paralysis is working while you're still conscious, it's almost always quite traumatic, and is a likely explanation for many alien abduction stories.

Wiki:
Quote
Humming, roaring, hissing, rushing, zapping, and buzzing noises are frequent in conjunction with sleep paralysis (SP). This happens when the REM atonia sets in sooner than usual, before the person is fully asleep, or persists longer than usual, after the person has (in other respects) fully awoken. Sleep paralysis is reportedly very frequent among narcoleptics.
[...]
The paralysis itself is frequently accompanied by additional phenomena. Typical examples include a feeling of being crushed or suffocated, electric "tingles" or "vibrations", imagined speech and other noises, the imagined presence of a visible or invisible entity, and sometimes intense emotion: fear or euphoria and orgasmic feelings. SP has been proposed as an explanation for at least some alien abduction experiences and shadow people hauntings.

Ah whoops, I always thought REM atonia was just REM sleep, and sleep paralysis was a phase that happened prior to that but (normally) after becoming unconscious.  Thanks for pointing out the distinction. :)

A pink and blue dawn.  Breakfast.  A drive across country.  Beautiful fields.  A glance to the side.  Never saw it coming.  Glass shatters.  I roll.  Eternity of motion.  Silence.  Shards.  Pain.  Tears.  I close my eyes.

Water trickles, then a torrent.  I open my eyes.  Hot steam caresses my anxious body.  A pool forms.  Rubber ducky is so mellow yellow.  Floats around and doesn't give a ****.  Nests in a cove of bubbles.  The water rises.  A dull pop.  A gurgle.  A roar.  Vortex.  Spiral into blackness.  Despair.

Last night I had a dream in which I was in the middle of a medical inspection. At first there was a nurse that was either deaf or an idiot since she wrote my name, my address... well all my basic information wrong to the report paper even if I repeated them several times. After that she handed the questionaire papre to me, you know a paper that asks ones eating habits and so on. Only that the paper was meant for horses and it asked if I had had an affair with a horse... among questions like "Was the horse fast?".

Then I woke up... I never knew if I was actually a horse, such a shame.

I hate dreams like that. You try to write something down, explain something to someone, figure out what time it is... it just keeps going wrong, no matter how hard you try. Just last night I had a dream where I was buying something (I guess) and tried to pay with my debit card. The pin number went wrong all the time, no matter how hard I tried to enter it. Numbers were in the wrong place, the device would register one press two times, the device would pull letters(!) from somewhere... it even started to show the numbers I entered instead of asterisks and that was unnerving, as there were a lot of people passing by and staring at the device.

As a child I had a long episode of recurring dreams about bipedal toad or crocodile like creatures bothering me. I usually found myself in a white space with no floor or ceiling where they would cradle me first while talking to me and theb would threaten to eat me up, talking to me at a stern tone but I don't know what about anymore. After half a year or so they suddenly ceased. They somewhat resembled a cross between 'Plons de Kikker' and your stereotype fantasy film beast. Maybe TV does screw up a childs mind and nightrest. :P

I had one recently that was both remarkably coherent and I managed to retain most of it.  I personally did not feature in it but it was instead a werewolf "film."
It was set in the late 70s, early 80s and funny enough my brain managed to project visuals with the right level of graininess for the period.  It featured Alan Rickman, Yaphet Kotto and Michael O'Keefe among quite a few others.  Michael O'Keefe was the unfortunate inflicted with the werewolf condition so aside from the intro portion of the dream used building the characters and their relationships spent the later half as the canine murder machine.  The lot of them worked the night shift at a big power plant, so on the first full moon after being infected Michael O'Keefe's character turned and proceeded to hunt and kill all his coworkers.
Because of the industrial environment and the style of cinematography I managed to apply to the whole thing it had a strong Alien feel.  Overall it was a pretty bad ass.

I have a reccuring dream where I get chased down a never ending hallway with bloody walls, by a freakishly tall man with no face and a tattered greatcoat. He always catches me and as he punches his hand through my chest, I wake up.

I've had this one for years, and pieced the parts I remember each morning together for a few weeks.  I usually have the dream two or three times a week, pretty crazy huh?

So I'm currently on vacation out in WA, and the place I'm staying in is right next to the railroad.  Sometime during the night as I slept, a coal train came whipping by, and let me tell you these coal trains are at least 120 cars long, REALLY loud, and they are required to blast their horns as they pass by because there's a crossing just up the road.  Anyway, all this noise carried over into my dream, and in my dream I was somehow convinced that I was lying in a bed ON THE TRACKS as this bigass train was steaming my way.  What do I do?  What does any recon pilot do when he suddenly finds a Sathanas hurtling directly at him?

DIVE DIVE DIVE HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT (http://dive-dive-dive.ytmnd.com)

And I awoke to find myself in the process of diving out of my bed and slamming into the floor.  Best.  Morning. EVER.

Few weeks ago, I found myself in a blank white room, having a genuine ninja battle with a girl with no face (she probably did, I just didn't see it).
Two or three people stood on one side of the room, watching silently, not moving.
So there the two of us were, crouching-tigering all over the walls, throwing knives and shuriken at each other, the weapons bouncing harmlessly off our armor, until we met in the center of the room, swords swinging. Hers hit first, embedding in the armor on the left side of my chest. Then I swung mine, horizontally, and hard. It lodged in her armor as well.
So there we were, at an impasse. And then I woke up.

Crazy long epic dream about attempts to escape from a weird theocratic society.

First, some friends of mine and I attempted to escape by boat, and we were all having a good time, it was like having a party on some boats, laughing and drinking.  We stopped to sleep and were picked up and taken back to the city.  woke up in a strange bed, but the clothes i brought along were there.  I was greeted by a guy who was talking like Agent Smith when he got into that one guy's body.  There were 2 guys in this nice, roomy house, both had short hair.  the house was decorated in white and light colors.
I started getting ready to escape again, started talking to people about smuggling myself out of this city.  Found my contacts freshy murdered, murder weapons (oversized knives) left embedded in them.  I was taken to a meeting with the odd, extremely large, bedridden leader of the society.  He talked to me for some time and made some veiled threats.  I pretended to go along with him, then went downstairs one floor, walked into the bathroom, then did a badass awesome Trinity style jump through the bathroom window (fists first, horizontal) and landed in the river.

I swam underwater as long as i could, until it wasnt city on both sides of the river.  For some reason all I had with me was my bathrobe.  I just made a run for it this time, running the whole time parallel to the major road, keeping hidden, not sleeping.  Getting in and out of houses in the suburbs (which sprawled for a longer than expected distance).  I eventually met up with others that were trying to get away, but i kept my distance, not wanting to get picked up again.

I ran my way out of the area, northwest, and the land got increasingly dry until i came across a refugee city that was getting aid from the city i left.  It looked like a giant concrete garbage dump, but much more grand, with domes and arches, but with dirt and the garbage dump layout preventing it from being pretty.  I decided it couldnt be the Free city i was going to, and kept running.

I think i eventually got to the place i was going, and i was able to settle down, but i distinctly remember still just having my bathrobe.  Someone did regular smuggling runs and asked if they could get my stuff.  I asked for my laptop but i doubted they'd be able to get it.  I never figured out what happened to my friends

Then I woke up

Le bump.

~
Awoke to a disturbance in my house last night.
I thought 'Could it be an intruder?  Holy ****, it just might.'
I took up my sword and descended the stairs.
And stopped dead in my tracks, for the bastard was standing right there...
Unconsciously I sucked the air through my teeth.
As I withdrew the sword from its sheath.
Which then bumped audibly against the wall...
The man snapped toward me and I despaired, "Oh **** it alllll..."
He reached for his gun, I dove toward his feet.
If my slash lands first, I might have him beat.
The muzzle flashed; it made not a sound.
The silence was indeed quite profound.
Behind my eyes burst forth a sharp butterfly of crimson.
And I thumped to the floor, then lost all vision.
My breath was ragged.  Am I dying?
The world melted.  Now I'm flying.
~

Ok, not quite how it went... after the shot I did indeed see a brilliant but brief flash of a fractalized crimson butterfly.  An iridescent crimson and violet, actually... it was quite beautiful.  I wasn't even entirely aware that I'd been shot until the view switched to a vantage from behind me, and through the top of my head there was a jagged hole.  Eesh.
I lay there for a distressingly long time, contemplating my imminent death while gasping for breath.  Woke up hyperventilating.  Great way to start my day. :)

I once had a dream that I was at work and everything was going wrong.  I worked cash at the time and for some reason, I was the only one open and there was a line stretching back quite a ways and everyone was complaining and blaming everything on me, and the lights were going out around the store.  And then it came to me... there was no way this was happening.  "It can't be real... I must be dreaming... and that means that none of this matters and you can all screw yourselves.  I'm leaving, bye!"  I recall it being quite liberating to be able to behave that way at work without consequence.

I once had a dream where I was in a Gato-class submarine.  It fit in a kiddie pool.  Vietnam (and I remember it distinctly as being Vietnam, despite what I'm about to describe) was also in the kiddie pool, constructed as a sandy island, with no vegetation at all.  The only occupant of Vietnam was a geisha wearing a clown nose.  She was clearly searching the water for the submarine, and upon finding it, she said (or sang?), "I wish I knew you were only a memory."

I woke up at that point, confident of two things:

1)  I'm quite happy not to remember most of my dreams.
2)  I clearly never need to do LSD, as my mind is capable of coming up with enough crazy **** without chemicals aiding the process.

I had a dream where I got eaten by a Lugia, whose stomach was full of bicycles and tennis rackets for some reason. I then proceeded to grow sharp blades out of my hand, Prototype-style and ripped open the Lugia's chest and left. Then I discovered I was in some bizarre amalgamation of New York and the Lingshan Islands from Crysis.

And there were Alien Warships everywhere.  There is a TAC Gun at my feet, and I pick it up. I am attacked by hundreds of Alien Warships and was apparently going to die fairly quickly, but annoyingly my mother rushes up the stairs and annoys me about something which I can't remember now, thus waking me up.

I have plenty of "strange dreams" to talk about. In fact I can actually alter my dreams - introduce stuff into the "plot" so to speak, and change what's happening.

I had a dream once where I was in a fighter jet (maybe at an air show) and wound up crashing.  I remember the millisecond before the crash being a blinding flash of light, and having my eyeballs roll up into my head.  Not a pleasant way to wake up.

@Firespawn, breathe..

I dreamt I had an awesome night, woke up feeling like my head was put through a mangle.
