Title: Scariest book I've read in a loooooooong time
Post by: The E on July 29, 2011, 03:25:39 pm
Rule 34 (http://www.amazon.com/Rule-34-Charles-Stross/dp/0441020348/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311970944&sr=8-1), by Charles Stross.

A novel about crime-fighting in a near future that is on its way to being a panopticon surveillance society, with the added fallout from the latest recession, spamming, and behavioural targeting. Read it. It is awesome. And truly, truly scary.

Wait...

Quote from: Amazon
Detective Inspector Liz Kavanaugh is head of the Rule 34 Squad, monitoring the Internet to determine whether people are engaging in harmless fantasies or illegal activities.

It's about internet porn police?

Not exactly. It's about Police trying to come up with a handle on weird internet stuff spilling over in the real world. Think happy slapping escalated a bit.

We all know the rules of the Internet. Yeah, even that one about porn. Now substitute porn for murder... yeah, the book is about that and the allusion is intentional.
