Title: PCS trouble (files not loading)
Post by: Moonfall-Wolf on July 30, 2011, 02:46:27 pm
Alright, I've recently attempted to create my first ship in accordance with FSF's shipbuilding tutorial. I had very few errors until I attempted to load the exported .dae file into PCS (version 2.1, from early 2011, says .dae is valid filetype) When i locate the file and open it, PCS behaves how you would expect, with "starting file load". Then, the title bar changes to display the name of the file, however, nothing is in the viewscreen, and all values are set to zero, textures are missing too. It is as though i opened an empty file. To test the program, i exported several .pof's from the root VP, and got the same result with those. Then I tested the same files with no fewer than 6 different builds of PCS, with the same results. Obviously I am being an idiot and forgetting to do something critical, or I have horrible luck with programs.
The files were loaded from various different locations and by builds of PCS in my documents, the Freespace 2 folder, and just outside of it. At this point, if I cannot fix this problem, I will be unable to proceed any further on my own, and this endeavour will have been a waste of many hours.
can anyone help me with this?
Attached is a copy of the .blend and .dae files just encase they are somehow the problem.
the modeling is very sloppy, so they might be just plain broken, but that still doesn't explain why retail files don't work.

edit: Updated files, it seemed that the textures did not work in the .blend file, now they do.

After messing with it for quite a while, I'm pretty sure it's because the texture assignments aren't exporting right. I opened the .dae in 3ds Max, applied a regular material with a bitmap texture on them, re-exported to .dae and everything seemed to show up correctly in PCS2. PCS2 doesn't even need to actually find the texture file, it only gets confused when there's no texture information at all.

I would agree with this, i managed to open the file in a viewing program and there is no texture present. However, and my lack of experience shows here, I have no clue how to replicate something like the bitmap texturing, and the only program I have is blender (and TS 7.61, but thats another story =p) Also, I still have a problem with PCS itself, apparently it can open weapon files (like the hornet), however there is no image in the box. Loading ships still leaves no image and all values at 0
progress, but im still working on it.
