Title: The Stanley Parable
Post by: achtung on August 07, 2011, 08:20:40 am
Quite the interesting HL2 mod that I would most definitely suggest, explaining too much of it would thoroughly ruin it though.

Here's (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/08/the-stanley-parable-were-going-to-cover-this-hl2-mod-in-a-new-way.ars) Ars' write-up on it which is thin on detail, as it should be.

Here's (http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-stanley-parable/downloads/the-stanley-parable-v13) the link to the mod itself.

If you discuss any detail in this thread, please make generous use of the

Unfortunately, FPSes in general cause me severe motion sickness.  In fact, I tried watching a playthrough video of The Stanley Parable and had to turn it off after about two minutes.

I'm assuming that owning Portal 1 counts as owning HL2? Or no?

(Basically, how do I got about installing this and loading it as a mod if I have the Source engine but not HL2)

Nm, found instructions in the readme that came with the dl.

Well, that was pretty cool.  I "watched" the playthroughs, if you can call mostly not looking at the screen watching.  Pretty clever.  Some of it reminds me of Deus Ex Machina. :D

It's interesting how an FPS would give you trouble, but playing something like FS wouldn't.  Maybe it's the lack of actual environment in the latter.

Good 'ol Kevan Brighting, I'd recognise that voice anywhere, he's the voice of Tesco on UK TV.

'Tescos, every little helps...' ;)

You'd think that, but flying through the Karnak tunnel provides an environment and I have no problem there.  I'm guessing the perspective or FOV is different in FPSes.

I did have trouble in FSO when I tried making the FOV overly narrow.  Also, the old wonderful RPG Betrayal at Krondor uses a first-person perspective, and that gives me no trouble at all.

I tried this mod with half my mind when it had just released, needles to say, it simply blew my mind... The level design was bad, but I guess a good game/mod doesn't necessarily need great graphics.

Huh. I really really hope this turns out to be some kind of mind**** and not just a straight remake. The mod wasn't that hard to understand.

The new web page for his game company says its going to add to it, not just update it.

I am cautiously optimistic.

He should make the part covered by the original more straightforward and understandable.... and then go bat**** insane with the new material. Fingers crossed...

I didn't really have any trouble understanding it.

Though:
Spoiler:
The ending that just stays black-screen forever (or at least longer than I was willing to wait for it) could do with a 'the end'.
