Title: Digital Photography Gallery, Summer 2011
Post by: Herra Tohtori on August 08, 2011, 05:27:50 am
In the beginning of this summer (in May 2011) I got my hands on a new camera; a Canon Powershot SX130IS. While it is by no means a DSLR, it's no slouch either, with good objective quality, 12x optical zoom at one end and rather wide angle at the other; twelve megapixel grid and, in general, rather good image quality.

However, this was not enough for me, the hifist that I am, so I downloaded and got CHDK (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK) installed on the camera's memory card. This enabled me to take RAW shots and do the image processing on a computer, which allows a bit higher quality compression-wise and also gives a few more opportunities in editing the colour balance of the images.

Here are some of the best shots I have taken during this summer.

From Helsinki:

Some beetle and an Old World Swallowtail butterfly. I've been photographing lots of insects since they offer a good way to utilize the macro optics of the camera's objective. There are a lot of them...

Some unknown Lycanid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycaenidae) butterfly.

Some lycanid, a Small Tortoiseshell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Tortoiseshell), and a Lesser Marbled Fritillary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenthis_ino).

(http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/1876/crw0384small.jpg) (http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/1876/crw0384small.jpg)(http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2240/crw0387smallsquare.jpg) (http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2240/crw0387smallsquare.jpg)(http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2136/crw0393small.jpg) (http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/2136/crw0393small.jpg)

Again some Lycanidae species of blue variety...

...and some gold-winged Lycanidae mating.

Spider's web (unknown species) lit by the morning sun, and a bumblebee.

Some shots of a dragonfly, most likely a Common Hawker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Hawker).

(http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/8964/crw0541small.jpg) (http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/8964/crw0541small.jpg)(http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/6850/crw0544small.jpg) (http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6850/crw0544small.jpg)

Red Admiral (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanessa_atalanta).
(http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2520/crw0592smallb.jpg) (http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/4342/crw0592small.jpg)(http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/4342/crw0592small.jpg) (http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/9899/crw0592smalla.jpg)(http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/7443/crw0592wide.jpg) (http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7443/crw0592wide.jpg)

And some unknown species of dragonflies, will do a bit of research to figure out what these are. The first, bright yellow one was a very docile and easy to photograph, as you can see.

(http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/2231/crw0604small.jpg) (http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/2231/crw0604small.jpg)(http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/2510/crw0604wide.jpg) (http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/2510/crw0604wide.jpg)

This one was slightly darker and gave a hump-backed appearance. Again, will find out what exactly it is.

I might update these with photos I've forgotten. Enjoy!

CHDK is awesomesauce. it can make even crappy cams like the A460 take relatively decent pictures  that arent just "point n shoot"

Dragonflies are boss, especially if you ever get to observe them hunt they can put a fighter jet to shame with the maneuvers they are able to pull.  Nifty pictures all around.
