Title: Good ot Bad idea?

I am thinking for sometime now to make a GDP ( Global defence platform ) for Freespace2. I was thinking of a simple sphere coverd whit turrets.

Specs i had in mind.
Turrets: 20 ( non barelled )
Size: About 1.5 KM in diamater
2 fusion reactors ( output 1*1015 Joule each per. Kilogram )
Duration: 3 years before refeul
Extra fission reactor whit a output of, 8.9*1013 Joule per. Kilogram.  


Offencive.

1 Nutron anti capship beams. ( main weapon )
5 Anti fighter beams.
5 Short and medium range flak cannons.
4 Medium plasma turrets.
4 Medium range missile lanchers.

Human input.

Control room: yes, near the celing of the sphere.
Fighter bay: yes, Near the bottom of the sphere can house 8 fighters ( 2 wings ) Interceptor class.

Hull: Cristaline armor 30 meters thick.

Targeting system: MTTS-12 ( Multi Traget and Tracking System ) targeting computer can track up to 257 targets.

Defence: The extra fision reactor is used to power a shield because of the size of the GDP the shield has a life time of 30 min in combat time, as the power needed of the shields to recharge is very high. Only adivisible to use if several turrets or subsystems are destroyed.


If the Nutron beam cannon is the main weapon for anti capships used fore corevette and destroyer class.
It's prety useless to juggernaut class ships, only whit a powerburst it can do some damage to this class of vessels, but it is strongly adivsed not to do a powerburst as reactor overload
is almost a sertainy.


This is what i have come up so far. More info later.

Mmmm... Sounds good :nod: .

I only have 1 thing to say. Only 1 Beam weapon? It would be defenceless against multiple caps. Make it 6 beams evenly divided over the entire sphere or something so it would stand a chance against a small planet invasion fleet.

There used in numbers like 50 for a small planet like earth. So like 7 GDP's could fire 'there main beams against a big target.:)

Go ahead - I'd just say that a more intrincated shape than a simple sphere would be good...

Powerfull enough to destroy a Deimos/Sobek corvette in 2 short shots.

Build a reasonably complex internal structure, with all the susbsytems, turrets etc - then build a destroyable 'shell' round them.

Turrets, IIRC, will fire through this shell no problem, so it'll be a neat armoured shield.  Also, if you don't UV map it, it'll be a one-colour semit transparent ...thing.

How many hit points (estimate) will it have?

Hmm..where did i hear that cookie thing before:p

Hit points i am not sure yet.

The plasma turrets can be used against bombers/corvettes/cruisers etc.
Or as a last ditch if the other turrets are out:)

I decided not to go for the shpere type thingy. Now i need to see what shape comes out and looks good:)

Since you don't have an octotoad I would suggest starting with something like an octohedron or a hexagonish shape and add in some details. May have to make one myself now. :) Sounds like something I might be able to texture without too much trouble, though I might need someone with a better TrueSpace to attach the turrets. (TS1 would probably screw up the textures and UV map, though I might be able to make a new one in LithUnwrap.)

Just make a Death Star. It'll have about the same appearance but with a better primary Beam Cannon.
