If you don't mind playing QuakeIII with StarWars skins, its not bad.
Beware the Nar Shaada levels, where if you're not really truly deeply psychic, snipers will swiss you before you know what happened. The beginning of this game is hard as hell, and it just doesn't feel like 'Star Wars' to me. Star Wars, last I checked, wasn't about a series of rooms with present combinations of enemies waiting to ambush your character at every turn, or convenient puzzles that JUST HAPPEN to be designed to make you use those most recent Force Powers you picked up. The single-player levels were designed more as an excuse to show off force powers than anything else, not for real play. Most of the weapons are damned useless: Trip mines? The Flak Cannon? The rocket launcher? Please. Have Lightsaber and Force Pull, will travel. You need nothing else.
On the other hand, the lightsaber duels pretty much rock. The force powers rock. The evil you can commit as Kyle Katarn JediSith just rocks. There's nothing like force jumping over a group of stormtroopers and force pulling them into the air (imagine an old Street Fighter 2 Zangief spinning piledriver ON TEN TARGETS AT ONCE). Or Force Gripping someone like Vader, then Force Pushing the bastard into a wall as he begins to fall. Witness the almighty wickedness of going to force speed and turning a room full of stormtroopers into gibbets of sparking flesh. Yeah, for this stuff the game is redeemed.
There is no doubt, you must have this game just to live out your most juvenile Star Wars jedi-wannabe fantasies.
-
Actually Mikhael, my first impression on the weapons were the same as yours.
Then for the sake of it, I decided to treat force speed like bullet time in Max Payne as an experiment. With the acrobatics and an Imperial Heavy Repeater the results were amazing, moreso then even a saber. Sure the saber owns on coolness factor, but force speed and firing concussion blasts on droids before they can shoot back and spraying a whole room of troopers with intreval concussion blasts is trippy and effective.
The flak cannon mixed with force speed is also very useful, properly bouncing shots off of walls makes it turn into a room full of shrapnel tearing through storm troopers, the secondary fire is also good at clearing out a room, fast.
The Rocket Launcher is also good for long range engagements on targets. (take for instance the Cairn reactor, lets you nail some distant targets)
Forcepowers though are awesome, grip mixed with saber-throw, or using force jump and pull at the same time to throw people in the air weaponless.
I do agree though that the puzzles are annoying, however they are less so then the ones in the original Darkforces.

I have the demo and i can already say that this game kicks arse

*ahem*

:p
anyways... theres something screwy about taking screenshots in that game... but otherwise its A1 SUPAR!!

I assume, you're Resorath.
Anyway tried the demo the other day. With this computer no JK2 for me.:(

No he's "Pure Class" ;)
Anyways, yes - buy this game. mikhaels review is essentially correct although parts of the game (single) are really truly excellent. Either way this is a definite buy.
-
However, I noticed that its is hard to deflect lasers with the lightsaber in multiplayer mode. Even with Saber Block at full points.
-
It's amazing game. Sadly, I can't play it on my own computer, but on my brother's computer I can.
The start wasn't too good, but I did like even the start. After I got my lightsaber, the next level was pretty annoying because of snipers. But then it got much, much better. There also hasn't been so many puzzles after some of the first levels. There also weren't that much Jedi fights (Edit: Actually most of them have been Reborns) shortly after I got my lightsaber, but now I have already killed lots of them, and I see one fairly often.

Well, I agree that some of those weapons aren't that useful (I haven't got rocket launcher yet, I'm on the reactor level, maybe it has been on some secret), but there are some like disruptor rifle, thermal detonators and Imperial heavy repeater, which have their uses. I think that Jedi Knight weapons are very well done, but lightsaber is the best of those all. :p
Also, lightsaber and force pull aren't enough, you need also push, jump, mind trick, speed, grip and lightning. Those all have their uses. :)
-
Nah. Lightsaber, Force Pull, Force Push, Force Grip and Mind Trick are more than enough.:)
-
And lightning if you want to be a whore about it and get cheap kills - no skills involved but it's amongst the easiest ways to take out Jedi...

Well, yes, they're enough. Except that you didn't list Speed, which you need at Cairn Reactor at least.
But it's always good to have more, and heal is pretty important. Lightning, at level 1, which I have, isn't too good yet, but it might be soon. :p
Also you need disruptor for long range shots. Or of course blaster pistol can do that too, but it's not as easy as with disruptor. :)
-
I'd gladly duel anyone from here in this game ;)
I've _never_ lost a duel in this game in multiplayer yet, I know how and when to use my force powers.
There's a nasty trick in multiplayer(which I don't use) that you can do nothing to defend against it. I won't tell, but its nuts.
Lightning is considered as a n00b power in this game... its rediculous. Only light jedi can defend against it, and thats only with absorb. And absorb has to be toggled. Drain pretty much goes in the same catagory, but its not as 'annoying' as lightning.
-
Ah yes, lightning whores. A friend of mine played JK2 at a LAN when it was first released and the usage of lightning was rapidly banned from play because it was such a skil-les weapon. Personally I think it's fine for single player and if you doing deathmatch or something then that's fine as well - but if your duelling then force powers should be restricted to the basic ones (jump, push, pull) so that only the skillful can do well - which is as it should be.

I found the Heavy Repater only useful at close range. At long range it was worse than the standard E-11 stormtrooper siderarm. Up close, the saber is signifigantly more effective. The secondary attack, while useful when you have great height advantage, like on a balcony shooting down on enemy units, is very dangerous to you on level ground or on the low ground. Usually, the higher ground is not THAT much higher, so Force Pull is just as effective. The flak cannon is good when you know there's a group right around a corner, but that's where thermal detonators or the DEMP gun excel. Finally, for long distance damage, you're usually best off with the disruptor than any other weapon, except, perhaps, a missile, which is much slower. Trip mines require planning, which is not very helpful in singleplayer. In multiplayer, I can see these being lovely things indeed. The same goes for remote blast packs.
Forcepowers though are awesome, grip mixed with saber-throw, or using force jump and pull at the same time to throw people in the air weaponless.

The only time the puzzles are really annoying is in cases where they make no sense at all. Doom Comm comes to mind, as does the first part of the Cairn Reactor level. Other times, the level design assumes a certain amount of psychic ability on the part of the players. Stopping the sterilizer unit on the Atrus Mines level comes to mind, as does the whole of Nar Shaada. Stuff like this makes a game feel more like Quake or Unreal than a Star Wars universe story.
All of that said, there's some incredible moments in this game when you know you're in a Star Wars story. The first time you encounter the assault droids, or when you first face off with an AT-ST with force powers and lightsaber, or when you face off with a pair of Reborn fighting as a team... Yeah, then you feel the magic. The game is about a fifty/fifty mix of Quake and StarWars moments.
Its a must buy, all the way around though, because its very satisfying. I'd put it after System Shock 2, Deus Ex and both Thief games if I had to rank it. It tops all other shooters beyond those four.
-
I agree with you there on ranking with other FPS games.
On the "psychic moments" in my opinion it gives it definately a feel like Starwars Episode II, not like Quake, but the "kill thousands of people and run through a smashing vent shaft which would kill anyone but the most aware Jedi" situation. Definately Artus and NarShaada award awareness of the area, the clues are all there and it makes you slap yourself when you realise that you missed them. In truth I think it's because so many people are used to games like Quake which are more rigid and linear with obvious solutions, when JK2 rewards observation.
The only puzzle in game that in hindsight is truly lame, is the Doomgiver's comm array. *WHY THE CONVENIENTLY HUGE MULTISTORY COMM ARRAY AND DEATH DEALING PITS?*

I am still kind of undecided on this game; it looks quite nice as a game alone, but then again, I'm not into SW at all, which will mean that I probably will not understand a bunch of story-related stuff in the game. :p
-
DAMN IT! My mom sent me the game yesterday and it was supposed to arrive today at my adress but it didn't. I was checking the mailbox every 15 minutes and it still didn't come.
I WANNA PLAY THE GAME!!!!!!!!AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! :mad2: :mad2: :headz: :snipe: :snipe:
-
aah, the neverending wonders of snail-mail. Brings back memories (like when I used to write to my grandma. I was about 8 or 9 back then. Now, I'd just send them an e-mail. Can't do that though, they're both dead.:( )

That's the great thing, there's very little to have to understand before you play the game. It's all introduced in the intro and you can treat it as yet another blaster where you're a sort of super hero if that makes things easier :)
At least try the demo
-
For making lasting impressions, a lightsaber is always the best.:)
The Force is A-1 SUPAR!!!!:D
But the Lightning power is enough cause for any Jedi player to turn to the Dark side.

W:jaw:W
I finaly got the game after two months of waiting. I have completed the first two levels and now I am on some damn sucking mining planet. I said that because the game runs like crap sooo slow and even on lowest configurations.
Heh, love that scene:
* BOOOM!! Jan: "What was that?" Kyle: "Just another day at work Jan"

Yeah, on my brother's computer, the game usually runs fine (1024x768, all on max except texture detail on high - too long loading times), but that Artus Mine ran very bad. But only when you were outside, and it didn't matter too much so I didn't touch the details.
The game will get awesome (if it isn't already) soon. ;)

Well thanks for the encouraging words Redfang. So I shouldn't give up playing this thing eh?

Actually you should. It will not actually get any better. :headz:
j/k
Yeah, you shouldn't. If you want, I can tell you how much you have left before you get the lightsaber and Force powers. :)

Well I hope you are really kidding because I really enjoyed the game so far. And don't tell me when I am gonna get the saber and force powers. In the manual they had a spoiler about the first level and I thought:
"NOOO!!! EVIL!!!" :mad2: :headz:
-
:p
Well, it's good that you already enjoy the game. It will only get better after lightsaber and Force powers. :D:nod:

I am sure it will. :)
