Title: Stuck: the choice in mission 10 doesn't work

So I got to the test pilot mission, killed the three waves of enemies, and then got given the choice of trying out a ship with either added firepower or more speed. However, I can't make the choice happen: pressing 1, 2 or any other key doesn't do anything. I have mapped throttle control to 1 so I even tried if clearing the mapping would help, but it didn't.

Do you know what key you mapped multiplayer "message all" to?

None. But true enough, mapping that to something and using it worked. Weren't these kind of problems due to key remappings avoidable in FRED somehow, though?
