Title: Freighter 'Technicals': community modelling project proposal
Post by: T-Man on August 24, 2011, 01:34:23 pm
I was wondering; would anyone else be interested in a group project for concepting/designing/modelling civilian ship technicals (that is, civilian vehicles that have had weapons and/or armour bolted on by paramilitary forces, the news covering the fighting in Libya has some fantastic examples) for people to give pirates and civilians in Freespace Campaigns? (I recall Sol:AH for example included freighters as gunboats in some missions).

I wanted to propose it as a community project as it means a light load for everyone, and would be a good resource for people wanting to do more piracy or civilian related games. It's also a project people of varying skills could contribute to. A starting modeller could do even something as simple as a Chronos with a watchdog sentry welded on the side (as in game it would be... just that, a Chronos with a watchdog welded on the side ), while veteran modellers could try more heavily modified models to show majorly upgraded or rebuilt ships.

Its feasible that some proven technical 'layouts' would be copied a lot, or corporations would provide legit upgrade packages for freighters to give civilians some means of protection, which would explain particular technical models appearing several times in campaigns, though people might like to try a few ad-hoc designs too. I had in mind mostly general FS designs, but some mod projects might like to have some made specifically to suit their universes (like the Gef in BP).

So yeah, any interested people? Any ideas welcome.

PS: The poster would like to apologise to any legitimate government, in any FS campaign universe, whose citizens are shortly hereafter pillaged by ravaging hordes of Chronos-made-cruisers and beam-toting-Tritons.

Modeling seems to be the easy part. I'm still waiting for the Moscow to have a UV Map and textures. :sigh:

In other words: BlackWolf tried something similar and it's still WIP.

It does. Water uvmapped and textured it a long time ago but no one finished it.

Is there any working download link to mapped model? I think I would be able to finish it if I recive uvmapped model with textures.

Original thread links are dead, so we have to wait for either BlackWolf or whoever else has the maps and models.

This would be useful... and I'd be interested if I didn't have my hands full texturing for both FSU and Scroll.

FringeSpace actually has 2 freighters, a heavy and light, that we could use modeled before we get to a alpha demo. I know we'll need weapons added to them since they
are normally without... but haven't made a decision on low profile turrets that would fit with their design without being obnoxious like all of Tach's original turrets were.
So this would be of interest to us if you're looking for a couple submissions. The original models are not complex by most of your standards.

A technical is a land vehicle, and almost always a pickup truck. Merchant ships wielding heavy weaponry are called merchant raiders or Q-ships.

Depends. If it were simply carrying the argument in cargo containers and was otherwise unmodified it'd be closer to a technical than a AMC or Q-ship.

A technical is a vehicle used by rebels and guerrillas of various sorts. These rebels are bribed by the UN to stay quiet, and are listed as a technical expense, hence the name.

The definition would sure work in space, although an escape pod with guns and another with a boarding party would  make better technicals than a Triton with a Mjolnir beam...

When I get back to Poland next week, I'll see what I can do to make turrets multiply on the freighters, and perhaps make a reskined escape pod with a gunpoint or 2...

There were armed cargo containers floating around somewhere too, and these could be useful...

The equivalent of a Technical for boats is a boghammar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boghammar), though who actually uses that?

GTFr Boghammer sounds like a nice name for a Triton with 6 turrets hauling a cargo container with a hangar for 6 fighters, 2 escape pods for boarding, and 2 turrets of its own...

Dibs!

P.S. Having a GTFr Boghammer as the player's carrier might make a good setting for a campaign...

Axem did a cargo with hangarbay and turrets for Triton. It's pretty good, unfortunetley it's still unfinished. I think it's still available on his site.

Iran, among others.

A boghammar is based on a small motorboat though. FS freighters are much, much larger and more sophisticated. Aside from the Hermes, FS doesn't really have any such superlight vessels.

I could try to take a shot at finishing it...
That would be a very useful asset.
