Let me sum up first of all - Wow. This game kicks ass.
I've played the PS2 version at a friends house and I was impressed with what I saw - it still had the slightly jaggedy visuals I've come to expect from many consoles and the loading times leaft much to be desired but it was still a great game and worthy of being proudly put on display as a selling point for the PS2.
Of course, the PC version came out a week after I'd played this and I bought it immediatly (sold on what I've seen of it in the PS2 edition as well as the previous games). So what's it like? Well the short answer is a combination of Driver, GTA and Carmageddon. In short, perfection. It might not have Shivans in it but this game sure as hell doesn't need them, in the PC version the graphics have been improved (hi-res! w00t!) as well as some other improvements, mouse control and so on. What we've got here is a fully functioning city where anything you can see can probably be interacted with at some stage. Want a car? steal it. Don't like that persons suit? Hit him - or better still, find a weapon of some type (baseball bats, pistols and shotguns are readily available)... other stuff is around if you look. There are also some conveniently placed ramps dotted around the place for spectacular stunts and so on (ever tried to jump a coach over three lorry trailers? It's possible...). This is by no means the extent of what there is to do around the place but it's enough for you to get the idea.
However the game is not without flaws - as close to perfect entertainment as it comes it's still a port from a console and as such a couple of things happen now and again that makes this apparent.. I've fallen through the floor a couple of times and the camera has gone...strange... now and again as well. Although this doesn't detract from the game it is noticable from time to time. Also the nature of the game means that system specs are very important. Like Max Payne if your computer can't cope you will notice the difference. For the best gaming experience it's essential to have a good PC.
If anyone is having trouble with the game due to it loading music from the CD, get the no-cd crack - it works wonder. I've had a solid high-FPS ever since loading it. This isn't a promotion for warez before anyone asks :)
So - overall, an amazing experience. Unfortunately there's no demo at the moment but I certainly give it 10/10 and suggest everyone try it at least once. It's a landmark game.

Use the 'gore' cheat and shoot someone's leg, arm or head. It 'll be fun!
-
Everyone is praising this game, I guess I should try it then
btw. if you wan't to have gore... SOF2... that's all you need :snipe:

Especially with the shotgun :D

But GTA III has "funny" gore.
*looks out the window and sees red fountains all over the place*

ever tried to jump a coach over three lorry trailers?

One second - I'll take a picture :)
Edit: As promised...

That can't possibly be from the game. It must be rendered or something.

Flying bus... cool ;7

so it finally came out for PC, now I wonder if its modable, I have "plans" for it :drevil:

Unlikely.

Zeronets right, it's all in-game. I can prove it by making the same jump at another angle or with a different car or something if you like - there is a ramp on the far side of the trailers so it's not like the cars are flying of their own volition :)

Flying busses eh... What other Speed moments can you relive? :D
Gonna have to check this one out.

Flat beds, Trash Trucks, and Security cars are just about the olny ones, you also get to drive boats :)
-
Yeah, this game is sweet. I'm hoping to get out of Portland soon, I'd love to steal some BMWs and SUVs and run over wife and kids with 'em ;)
-
Seems like a good game. But my PC can't run it, I know it already... :headz:

Well, that's true. But when a game shows big area it can't have the best graphics, because it would be too much for most if not all computers.

Nah, i could never buy GTA 3, ive been put off it by life 2 people (one of which is incredibly anoying, and happens to be incredibly loud for such a small person) talking about it endlessly in my physics and graphic comm. class about it.
WE DONT CARE HOW LONG YOU CAN FLY THE PLANE FOR! SHUT UP CLAIRE!
sorry, she pisses me off, and i trust she isnt on this message board.

Heh, I've never wanted to start a platform war but this thread is just too tempting. (I want to say I've been playing this game for months on the PS2 while you guys are just now getting it on the PC. Oops, guess I just said it. :p )
Ok, sorry, now that I got that out of my system, I have a legitimate question. How does the driving part of the game work out? I've yet to play a driving game on PC that doesn't suck major ass because I don't like the feel of driving with a keyboard. (You just don't seem to get the same responsiveness as you do with a gamepad. However, I'm sure the walking/shooting part of the game is much better because of the ability to use the mouse/keyboard combo)
-
Well you could use a gamepad to play it on the PC or the mouse for steering.

Yeah - I know, but we'll talk about the game - then let this degenerate into a console war - K? :)

Actually I find it suprisingly good, each car "feels" different which is good (unlike some games where the only difference is it can accelerate/go faster at top whack). I know driving doesn't always seem "real" on a keyboard and to be honest I've yet to experience a wheel so I can't really compare but I do seem to prefer the controls on the keyboard over the gamepad. And yes, mouse movement in "on foot" mode is a godsend, I really couldn't get used to running around on the gamepad but with the mouse/keyboard combo it is of course second nature (and shooting is a hell of a lot more accurate).
I'll have to buy a wheel some time and see what (if anything) I'm missing...

I have the PS2 version basically because my PC could not support this game. Well yeah graphics are no the best, but hey, you have a WHOLE three-section city to interact with.
Other good stuff about the game is the NON-LINEAR gameplay, you choose what mission you wanna go to. You will eventually be down to 1 mission in order to free up some more. Also the game is not like some games that have been coming out lately, this game is actually LONG, and it'll take you time to get through it. One example is the Spider-man movie game, really nice game and almost just like the movie, but it took me about 1 day and a half to finish it.
And of course the variety of interaction, like that car? Steal it, you don't like how certain person looks, hit him!! But be careful, you can get your car stolen too, I don't know if you have experienced personally but in not-so-good neighborhoods someone can get you out of your car just like you do it to other people. Have you tried getting a hooker in your car? (I don't know if this is appropriate to say, feel free to edit it). If you want details I'll give them you.
In less words, great game and storyline, not short (I don't know why, but that's important to me) and I'm really looking forward to the next game, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City coming out in October.

Just on a note. Germany outlawed it after its recent school shooting, as so I've heard.

If you like to walk down the street and brutally murder a stranger with a bat then go ahead. :D
This game kicks ass.

I still dunno... carjacking on a computer isn't exactly the real carjacking experience, and if I wanted violence I'd go for a free copy of Syndicate and get it straight, no annoying pretense of a side plot.
That or State of Emergency or whatsisname. Nothing like an anti-WTO video game.:D
-
State of emergency is a VERY stupid game... Nothing like GTA III. :D
-
Sorry for the bump of such an old topic but I thought this was pretty interesting... did you know you can fly jets? You can :)
I'd tell you how but... well it'd spoil the fun of working it out - it's actually suprisingly easy when you know what to do. Faster than the Dodo as well...
-
Muwahaha! :devilidea
Can that thing fly? Given 9/11 and all that, I thought the Dodo's wings were clipped for just that reason.
-
What can I say, in a game where you can smack old ladies in the face with the butt of an M-16 I don't think it can get much worse. At least there aren't any twin-tower scenarios that spring to mind (probably for the best, all things considered).
-
So is that a yes or a no? :D
And creating your own homemade WTC Attack is what I was alluding to for the planes not being able to fly...
-
Well I'm no where near that far in the game (blowing up the boat with 8-Ball, I need to be quicker with the sniper rifle :p ) but I think what Thunder is saying is that the plane is flyable but "thank God no missions have me flying it into a building."
-
one of my mates used the tank to fly with the jump cheat.
