HomeWorld. Grr.
All right, so I went to all the trouble to track down, buy, install, and troubleshoot this miserable thing. I've fulfilled the system requirements. I've downloaded patches. WHY won't the little bugger do anything but give me **** ablut "no disc inserted" and then close? Do I need to remove and insert my hard disk? Or just the part of it that includes HomeWorld?
Is there some problem with putting the game on anything but the C drive? Or having multiple CD drives? 'Cos I already have a frisbee, and this was a bit expensive to be one.

You have multiple CD Drives?
I Assume you've tried putting the CD in all of them?
-
A straight CD drive and a CD burner minus the burner (doesn't work. Nothing does at the moment, apparently. I should have learned better than to ever touch a shared computer ever again.)
And yes, I have. Putting the CD in the burner-sans-burner gets a slightly more descriptive error message noting the existence of the other drive. I have yet to try and put the disk in both simultaneously.

I don't normally like to suggest this kinda thing but if you really have bought the game then I suggest tracking down a no-cd crack and seeing if that works. Best of luck :)
-
Yes, a nocd-crack would be a good idea.
BTW am I missing something here? Since when have nocd-cracks been illegal?
-
I had the same error as you, I got it working by downloading the patch, it should have worked whit you also. But as Thunder said a No-CD crack to test it would be a good idea. only you can't play online. Hmmm......when you used the no CD crack go to the multiplayer area in the game and let it download the patch automaticly. exit the game and restart it see if it works.

nocd-cracks are illegal because they are usually associated with warez... if you d/l a warez, you will need a nocd-crack... but if you actually have the cd, its still illegal to get one... but not to use it (weird isn't it?)
-
Relic lawyer: So exactly how did this crack get onto your computer then?
Disgrunteled owner: I dunno. Act of God?
Really who gives a damn if you do run a crack? You bought their game and your not exactly giving it to everyone and their gaming buddies.
If this is what it takes to make the game work then they should have put it on the disk for you.
-
Lets just concentrate on getting Strykes copy of the game working - I only mention the whole thing about not condoning nocd cracks because its the rule we don't talk about warez and I wanted to save myself the trouble of explaining it if someone bought it up :)

Mmm... They stopped having one at the site I know about, so... wow, illegal zero-day SimCity 4000 looks nice... lots of Russian... lots of German... I think I'm partially blind from some of those pop-up ads... and how the HELL can they have a Heli-Heroes crack but not a HomeWorld one? You can't even BUY Heli-Heroes outside of Germany, and it's a bad corporate imitation there!
Hello... what's this?
I knew Trekkies were behind all cybercrime. Ah well- thanks. We shall see if this works.

*ignites lightsaber*
Warez...
Do not post any links!
If you really want to talk about it go use email.

Simcity 4 on the other hand :)

And yes, this was a p1mp for my X-Wing.

I actually have downloaded no-cd cracks for every game I have (most support mutiplayer too), only because I got fed up with hunting around for the CDs in the dark and sometimes falling over furniture as a result, since I usually play games during the nights. :p :D Anyway, I also have a similar CD configuration (one normal drive, one RW drive) and the game seems to work fine for me without any patches or anything.

LOL most of those sites are simply jokes; I remember seeing reportedly full versions of Warcraft 3, Doom 3, Unreal 2, Starcraft 2, 3DS max 5, and several other nonexistant (at the time) programs on some major site about a year ago. It is usually possible to get what you need, but you usually have to slog through loads of these lies (along with "downloads will be corrupted if not 'enabled!' ") for at least a hour before finding something. :p
-
I know this sounds like crapola :D but I got this same problem too. If you accidentally deleted an app extension (ex. binkw.dll), this will hurt the game.
Also, your CD drives might just be gettin' shot :D. Reassuring, I know.

Maeg: Not to worry. I'm not a friggin' idiot, and considering that it takes almost no effort to track down multiple warez sites, I don't see why I'd go through the trouble so that someone else couldn't run a Copernic query.

Don't take offence it was more of a generalisation. You'd already posted without posting a link

Have you reassigned your CD drive letters? IIRC, Homeworld installed fine off a drive Z CD, but refused to play from that drive until patched.
-
I'm sure somewhere out there someone is willing to screw up every other program that regularly accesses a CD drive just to play HomeWorld.:p
And the crack worked fine. Game's either slow or hard to see, but that's likely an issue with my screwed-up video card.
And hey- 's pretty cool, and the ships aren't all THAT hideous in-game.:D

I think the models are good but the textures need a lot of work. The gameplay is very nice, though, and that's what matters. ;)

A cool thing about the textures was that they had designated areas that could have the colors changed dynamically. Shame that they limited it to mainly pastel colors. :doubt:

From Sierra's tech support site (http://sierra.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/sierra.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=2OoVLjgg&p_lva=&p_refno=000331-000039&p_created=954535020&p_sp=cF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTQwJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9MyZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMT01JnBfcHJvZF9sdmwyPX5hbnl_JnBfY2F0X2x2bDE9fmFueX4mcF9jYXRfbHZsMj1_YW55fiZwX3NvcnRfYnk9ZGZsdCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=)
Additionally, this error message may be caused by the presence of multiple CD-ROM drives installed on the system or if a CD Changer is installed to the system. With more than one CD-ROM drive, make sure that the drive from which Homeworld is being run from is set as the default drive for playing CD Audio files. To change the default drive setting:
- Double-click on the MY COMPUTER icon.
- Double-click on the CONTROL PANEL icon.
- Double-click on the MULTIMEDIA icon and select the CD MUSIC tab.
- Make sure the drive letter designation in the DEFAULT CD-ROM DRIVE FOR PLAYING CD MUSIC box matches the CD-ROM drive letter designation for the CD-ROM drive the program is being run from. If it does not match the drive letter, click on the down arrow next to the box and select the correct driver letter designation.
Also, if the system has more than one CD-ROM device, Homeworld may only operate properly from the CD-ROM drive with the drive letter designation closest to the Hard Drive. For instance, if the system has a hard drive on
letter C:, a Read/Write CD-ROM drive on letter D:, and a normal 24X CD-ROM drive on letter E:, the program may only operate on drive letter D:, since it is closest to the hard drive. Even if the program was installed on drive letter E: from the regular CD-ROM drive, since E: is not the letter closest to the hard drive, the program may not operate properly from this location. If
invalid CD errors appear running the program from a higher letter CD-ROM drive, insert the CD into the drive closest to the hard drive and start the program again.
Finally, the system may be reporting the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive incorrectly to the Program. Start Homeworld with the command like switch to force the CD-ROM drive path.
- Click on the START button and select RUN from the menu.
- In the OPEN box type in the Case-sensitive information below.
C:\sierra\homeworld\homeworld.exe /CDpath X: (where X is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.)
-
It's a moot point- Games run more smoothly when they aren't spooling off of a skipping CD, anyway.
And the texes aren't all that bad. They're ugly mainly because most of the color schemes appear to be randomized. Not as nice as the FS ones, of course, but HW's got to handle a lot more of them than FS ever does at one time.
-
1. Try reinstalling HWC.
2. Ensure that the disk is in the drive you installed from(don't ask me why, but it works with me)
3. Patch (1.1 IIRC)
Hopefully one of these will work. I'm working on an FS2 conversion to HWC with the Collossus as the Command Ship. Work has be slow of late but is continuing.

sounds challanging... your command ship is has the firepower of the old mothership from HW, and the hp of a scout, and as manuverable as an elephant in a space suit.
Remember, the Colossus can't enter hyperspace...

Who says so? Show him man!!:D
Anyway, I hope you get the FreeSpace conversion done. I can't wait to have a big battle.

You'd better be talkin' about the conversion...... The Kunn-Lan (or whatever) has enough turrets and firepower to obliterate an Ion Array Frigate on its own. Given that it can get more powerful through experience and double firepower through energy cannons, it can do some serious damage.

Hmmm... none of the little progs seems to work, with the exception of the BIG viewer, but as far as I can tell modding in HW makes WD extraction or wrangling with TS look like a good time. Yeeech.

Not really, aside from model design the actual insertion of ships is quite easy. It's just making sure you've got the folder structure right. And there are a few rules that you have to follow as the HW/HWC engine was not designed to moddable.
1. In HWC a model cannot have ANY exposed faces, as it causes a crash.
2. You cannot add ship slots, only replace. This does present a problem as certain behaviors are hard-coded.
If you bring up the the Unit Info window during play you will see that the Kuun-Lan has in excess of 750000 hit points. It once came under attack from the Imperial Garrison during the nebula mission in HWC. She withstood 2 Destroyers, Multiple IC Frigates, and assorted strike craft for over five minutes before she blew. Anyway, it's a MOD, the ships will be as close to the origianal material as I can make them.
-
Excess of 5 minutes? all I had were 5 Ramming Frigates, a dozen or so Acolytes which all dissapeared almost immediately, and the Kuun-Laan and I wiped the force out!
And learned the meaning of the phrase "ram them 'till they give up!". Ramming frigates rock.:D
You know, all around I think HWC has the coolest weapons of any game I've played in recent memory. I mean, Leeches, Ramming Frigates, and Mimics?
