These are the last remaining Shivan assets that never got HTLs. I'm hoping to get them all done for the next MVPs. Here is the list.

SSG Belial needs a new model THIS IS BEING WORKED ON- SSG Rahu is still retail, but honestly, it still looks rather nice. Could be upgraded, but not necessary.
This topic will serve as a place to discuss these models.

Wow, things are only getting better. I greatly look forward to see these assets released, as well as the fighters and later on, INFR2's Shivan stuff. Then I'll finally have enough variation to make Shivan fleets and formations look the way I want them to - big, imposing, diverse. Keep up the great work as usual.

I have a suggestion for this model as an upgraded version. I'm sure that there are more than one campaign designer out there that would appreciate a version of this model with a simple button turret on top of the red light at the center, and possibly another on the opposite side.

That's really simple to add with PCS2 and probably something that should be left to mods who need it.

If it was, we don't have a mesh.
We will HTL these things based on how terribly they look now. The Rahu, while still retail, holds up quite nicely next to other more recent models.
If we get around to it before the next MVPs release, it will be done after the others are finished.

Since you're discussing "Miscellaneous Shivan Assets", I reckon I might as well remind you guys that at one point I made a Shivan countermeasure (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=67088.0) which uses the existing Shivan missiles texture. It would be neat to see it in the next mediavps.

There are still a few Shivans I'd love to get a work over. Most notably the Comm Node and Trident. Rahu if someone is up to it.

Oh crap, I forgot I was working on the trident a while back. I was having a problem working out the angles on the arms but I solved that tonight and here it is.

I don't know about this model. It's very odd. The sharp angles and the prisms don't look too great. It seems like it can't decide whether it's supposed to be mechanical or insectoid. The compromise is unpromising.

Are you talking about the canons to the turrets? That kind of bugs me too but that is the way it is on the original and I'm not sure how much to deviate from that. The canons just seemed to be floating on top of the turret.

I'll rephrase what I've said. The original was unimpressive. Yours might look better if the prism arm things weren't prisms. Feels too low poly, and it doesn't fit with the new body.
In other words, it looks like you reimagined the middle turret section but then decided to do little to the arms. They don't seem to go together.

By itself, I'm not too fond of the new model, but I think if the textures are done right they have a potential to really sell it.

I can try beveling some edges but this thing is so small already I doubt it would be noticable any where else outside the tech room. Hence the reason I didn't throw polygons at it from the get go. You may notice that those arms are not just straight prisms. The parts of the arms that will be red glow are all recessed or cut away from the rest just like I've done in the all shivan models I've done to date.

Ah, well. Fair enough. I was a bit worried that depending too much on texture would be a bad idea, but I wasn't thinking about how small it would it in-game.

I would only just change the alternating parts on each of the arms. I'm not sure exactly how you should treat it instead, but it doesn't quite look shivan. This is one hard model to tackle though. Kudos!

Excellent work. :yes: The core and spinner look great. I'm not a big fan of the arms; I think the curves and 'scimitar tip' cutouts are a little uninspired. That's all the feedback I've got, keep it up.

I have to echo this. The arms look off to me as well.

Indeed, they certainly didn't "feel" like that on the retail model. They were less like blades and more like some sort of "umbrella". The core and arms both look great though.

The Comm Node looks very cool, but the big smooth curves on the main arms seem stylistically incongruous with the rest. Could the tips of the arms be made more jagged and vicious?

Well I might be open to doing something like Axem did on the mid section of his gas minor with the shield like structure punctured by a spike in the center on the ends. The arms on the other hand are limited, I'm open to suggestion on the top part of the arms but the bottom part would require altering the entire bottom structure of the center piece as well and that would be entirely too much work. It took forever to get the concave arches of the bottom structure to work and I'm just not willing to part with them. Especially considering that was the part I struggled the most with, the angles and structure in that area are with out doubt the hardest part to do any thing with that doesn't involve just making it a simple boxy strut with a few panels or recesses.

So, a week and no viable suggestions other than I hate the arms change them. I find myself loosing interest in this project.....
Not being pissy here just stating that I'm lost, have no idea how to proceed and I'll even consider reworking the whole damn top and bottom sections at this point if a very good, community tolerable suggestion comes my way.

I thought Battuta gave some nice critiques on the arms. What I'd suggest is making the jagged indents underneath less regular/uniform and more angular. I'm thinking of a Nightmarish Clam Shell or a Batwing-looking thing. That's the best I can describe what I'd like to see. As been said before, everything else looks great.

The only thing that comes to my mind is to make it look more like a claw.

Definitely needs some kind of sharp corner or "joint" in it instead of just being a smooth sweeping curve like in that WIP pic.
Everything else seems spot on.

Saying "it's good" is enough. Because this is the FreeSpace Upgrade, anything good enough will get included in the MVPs and we'll all be using it anyway (generally).

The gold and purple are staple Shivan contrast colors going all the way back to the Scorpion from FS1.

Can't wait to be slapped away for flying too close! It looks great! Only suggestion I'd have is that the center crystal looks a bit "plastic"-ish. It would be nice if it looked more like a crystal or metal.

I second this. Would it be trivial to give the crystal some translucency or not? Either way, that is a badass shuriken sandwich.

If you're gonna ask for something.. be sure it's not there first. You see those bright glowpoints.. riiiiight in the center of the crystal? Yeah, those. Those are inside the crystal because it already has translucency using a -trans texture.
