Title: strikingly similar
Post by: Riven on May 27, 2002, 10:52:32 am
I've just been to the inferno web site and it strikes me how similar it is to black water ops! I was wondering if i had missed some deep part of the FS2 plot, why would the earth alliance want a war with the GTVA? i think its a good idea for a campaign i was just wondering what would cause such a war.

Also is black water ops a new name for inferno because they seem incredably similar.

Inferno: http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/inferno/

BWO: http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/

Nope...two completely different campaigns.  Just because the very basic idea is the same doesn't mean that they are the same campaigns or even related.  Check out Machina Terra while your at it because it also has a similar outline: http://terra.sourceforge.net/

However, there are major differences between all three.  Inferno has alot of Shivans, big capital ships, and even the Ancients seemingly integrated into their campaign.  Machina Terra is also slightly Shivan oriented but I don't want to give much away their either.  Then there is BWO which is the project that I'm most involved in (and Kellan and I did create it).

BlackWater Operations is more character/politically oriented.  You play as Commander Aidan Mallory of the 101st BlackWater Squadron.  BlackWater Squadron is a GTVI squadron and they go and do the things that need to be done.  Ultimately, you have to make a choice on which side you join.  An Earth/GTVA war is only a portion of everything that will happen in BWO.  Different elements, different focus.  I personally feel that all three are quite different and well worth the time to check out when completed.

And if you did miss any plot point from FS2, Earth/Sol System was cut off from the rest of the Alliance at the end of FreeSpace 1.  So all of these stories have a plot point that involves making contact.

The war with the EA only lasts the first chapter, the main story is about something completely different...

But why do both campaigns have "Earth Alliance" is that just because it sounds good or is there some referance to this somewhere? By the way, i think that both campaigns are looking very good and i can't wait for their release but (not that there seems to be any problem with this at the moment) don't rush them. So many campaigns have had such high hopes but then been a dissapointment on release. Do either of u have an ETA for the campaigns (i guess at least next year!?)

Being as you both seem to be experianced modders can you help me out? I want to export POF's to COB but POF2COB doesn't work and i downloaded PCS by Alliance Productions but this is just .cpp and.h files like the Freespace source code. Obviously i can read the text in these but how do i make them work? They both seem to refer to MSDEV 6.0 which after searching seems to be linked to C++ Visual. Does this mean i need C++ or is there a compiled version of PCS somewhere. Please help.

Only Inferno uses Earth Alliance as far as I know.  In BWO its the Sol Coalition of Planets (SCP).

I suspect you downloaded the wrong file. What you want is The Alliance Productions FreeSpace 2 Kit from  this site (http://alliance.sourceforge.net/FS2Kit.shtml)

I'll have to show them all my red card (in BWO terms of course) :D
