Title: Tentacle turrets--Possible?
Post by: BlasterNT on September 26, 2011, 11:58:17 am
Hi, for the ships of a species I'm making, main weaponry on  capital ships are mounted on "tentacles" (kind of like the flexible arms on desk lamps) that are segmented in metal.  Is there any way of achieving this effect in FreeSpace, or of faking it?

As of right now, I don't know whether you can or not. I'm venturing a guess at no though.

Well, if you build the tentacles out of many subobjects and then control those with a script or something, then maybe. It depends on whether the turets would work right when mounted at the end of such a chain, and whether there's a big enough limit on chained subsystems to allow for proper tentacles in the first place.

I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going.

I'm not sure that's something to admit in polite company, Vader.  :p

ISTR Nuke's GTF Phoenix (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTF_Phoenix_(Nukemod)) uses variable geometry wings that may be analogous to what you are looking for.

that doesnt work to well, especially after they reduced instance depth from 7 to 5 a long time ago. you can get 5 stages of geometry for animations, but the turret code will only animate 2 of them, so you will have to learn scripting.

Wait, why did a reduction in depth happen?

instance depth was upped way back when subobject animation was implemented. but i guess somewhere it caused other issues so it was reduced back to 5. so that version of the phoenix doesn't work anymore.

If we hadn't been such prudes during the occupation after WWII and let the Japanese have their penises we could have avoided all of this.

I maintain it was less prudish occupation and more the fact nuking the Japanese broke their minds :p (No offence intended.)
