Title: Screen Savers?
Post by: Retsof on September 26, 2011, 02:06:31 pm
Basically, do you people know of anywhere I can get screen savers (preferably free) without them being infested with viri?

www.freewarefiles.com has a section for screensavers. I can`t say I've really used any of them, but I've used the rest of the site for plenty of stuff and for the most part everything is clean there. Obviously still a good idea to virus scan anything you download.

One question though. Other than aesthetics, why do you really need a screensaver? Unless you have a CRT and never let it go to standby, there's little to no risk of burn-in, and it actually shortens the life of LCD's because it means the backlight is on the entire time, using up it's available lifetime.

I'll have to check that out (at work atm) and aesthetics is pretty much the only reason.

I think I've been using this Descent 3 screensaver that takes models from the game's files and rotates them on-screen for something like seven years now.  Come to think of it, it would be wicked if someone could pull the same thing off with FS. :D

http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=3315 is pretty neat, if you're not concerned about energy use or lifetime.

Dunno if it works on newer operating systems, though.

Screensavers. How old. They were a novelty back then and are now. I just use power management to turn off my display after a certain amount of time.

Although, this screensaver (http://www.ultimatesavers.com/index.asp?ID=2837) did catch my fancy a long time ago in my voodoo 3 days.

I used to have a bit of fun with this F-16 flight simulator screensaver (http://download.cnet.com/Flight-Simulator-Screensaver/3000-2257_4-10177043.html). The graphics are nice and customisable, and IIRC you can control the jet too.

Then again, it might be a bit too power-intensive for a screensaver. Nowadays I tend to turn the monitor off if I have to leave the computer for a while (it's an old monitor too).

EDIT - Oops, just realised that the link is for the trial version; I didn't have the full version (need a regcode - full version is $29.99, available here: http://www.longgame.com (http://www.longgame.com) - think I'll pass).
